1999 P PROOF SBA THIN RIM ERROR VARIETY ????

It seems that the "thin rim" is simply a case of the obverse die being less than perfectly aligned axially with the reverse die. It's not very noticeable on coins that have conventional borders and rims, but it becomes noticeable on the SBA Dollar, with its odd shaped border.

If you look closley it is like that on both sides. What could cause this? Other SBA coins that I own of this type are not like this.

Thanks for your time.

I doubt this, but my best guess is that the coin could have been struck on some foreign planchet just 1-2mm smaller than the SBA planchets, the only problem is that the metal would have spread outward in this case. It is also possible that some dies were like that, if that is the case, I doubt it would ever be worth the 1,000 starting price you are requesting.

I don't think the mint is producing foreign coinage these days. So I would lean against a foreign planchet. I'm going to also say it's a slight misalignment of the dies. Which happens quite frequently. I have several that have a slight feature like this.

I agree with Neil, but there is an outside, slight chance this is 1% off center (or, Broadstruck) but I doubt that due to it being a proof.

Well thanks for all the advice. Should I get it reslabbed and mention this feature?

It is like this on both sides but the obverse is not as dramatic. Could PCGS have missed it or would they even consider this kind of coin an error?

The coin might be slightly misaligned, but it isn't anything PCGS would notice nor is it valuable!! You need to re-read the above posts...
