Grading & Multi-Coin Holders

7 posts in this topic

Ordinarily, my first reaction would be to post this thread in the "Ask NGC" Forum. However, I feel that posting this in the "Tangents" Forum would give more people a chance to express their opinions and ask any other associated questions that may come to mind. In no way is this intended to slight NGC or "put them on the spot". I simply want to be sure that I fully understand the procedures.

After responding to another thread about 2005 Proof Sets, it got me wondering.... 893scratchchin-thumb.gif893scratchchin-thumb.gif893scratchchin-thumb.gif

If someone were to submit one U.S. Mint Proof Set, exactly how would a single grade be assigned to a 5-coin, 10-coin or 11-coin set? It's very possible that some coins could be PF69 while others are PF70.

Is it possible that some of the coins could be over- or under-graded? Unless you assigned a separate grade for each coin, it would seem to me that some sort of "average" or "net" grade would have to be employed.

How would NGC treat a special designation like "Ultra Cameo" or "Deep Cameo" if it only applied to 2-out-of-the-5 coins? Or, 7-out-of-the-10 coins?

Customer Responsibilities (Last page of Submission Form): Do not send coins in capsules or mint packaging. Coins received in capsules, mint packaging, stapled, or taped flips will be charged a removal fee of $1 per coin.

Wouldn't it be safer to submit the proof set in its original holder to reduce the risk of damage in transit? If I were NGC, I would consider deleting the first sentence, "Do not send coins in...." in its entirety. Of course, it is possible that NGC would prefer that the submitter assume the responsibility for possible damage when opening the holder.

Well, those are my thoughts. What about the rest of you? Does anyone have previous experience or knowledge of this subject?

I don't know! 893scratchchin-thumb.gif

But I do like the multi-holders! It would be great to have my entire Jefferson nickel collection encapsulated in them. 400 coins, 40 slabs, 4 boxes!

I could live with that! headbang.gif Oh, and one coin case to carry the 4 boxes! Gotta have that!

Leo, if you are just trying to poke fun at me then I should point out that you would need 80 5-coin holders. I don't think NGC has a 10-coin holder. 27_laughing.gif27_laughing.gif27_laughing.gif

However, I still haven't gotten an answer to one of my original questions.......

"How does NGC determine a single grade for a group of coins like a U.S. Mint Proof Set?"

Divide by 5?

I've received one of those state quarters in multi-holders thru my recent subscription with NGC and I'm only dreaming at the moment that 10 nickels could fit into one of these holders if it were set up to do so.

Interestingly enough, I've just noticed that all 5 quarters have been graded MS65. It's likely and I'm certain that this is the way they do it, you must submit 5 certified coins at the same grade to be included in their new holders. For the 5 quarters, they picked out five quarters that graded MS65 and placed them in the holder. Whether or not they would print out individual grades for each separate coin is beyond me at the moment, I don't know. I would hope that they would eventually do so, especially for collections that would look nice in this type of holder.

I personally, would love to see a three (or four) coin holder---the only requirement is that the coins all be of the same year but the three (or four) different mints. This might prove to be quite lucrative for NGC. Imagine a reg set based on this concept! 893scratchchin-thumb.gif or insane.gif???

They did the same thing last year with the 2003-D set. When I read that they were giving the 2004-P this year, I renewed 9 months early to be sure they didn't run out before they got to me. I think they're nice sets, but they didn't put them together for 1999-2002 P&D, 2003-P or 2004-D. I'll just have to submit a bunch of coins for those years and mint marks and specify MS65 as "minimum grade" to make a complete series.

Are you familiar with their "bulk submissions program" that is only available to dealers? If dealers get a price break, then I'll submit them through one of the local shops. Who knows? If I should get 66's or 67's in addition to the 65's, I think I'll have them all made into sets.
