Discovering a new variety ?

6 posts in this topic

If you should perhaps discover a new variety( an over date ) for a particular coin in a series, but you are not the owner of the coin. Would you receive the credit for the discovery or would the owner of the coin once the news was to break ? confused-smiley-013.gif

If you found it and submit the proper information to whatever person attributes the varieties for that series, you get credit.

Hi Greg,

Here`s the info on the coin in question. Checkout Heritage`s auction site, look at the 1798 Bust dollar, small eagle. There`s only one listing. Look closely at the 8.

In the enlarged photo there appears to be a 7 beneath the 8. The upper right corner appears to show the right corner, to the left there`s the vertical bar of the left side of the 7, and the final clincher seems to be the squared off angled tail of the 7 extending out from the lower left side of the 8. Hence a possible 1798/7 Bust dollar variety. Is this a known variety ? I realize that photos can and are sometimes deceiving. But if this were a mere anomaly in the photo, other aspects photo should follow the same anomaly. Take a look and give me your opinion. 893scratchchin-thumb.gif

I only have one poor reference for Bust dollars and this variety wasn't listed.
