This is penny of British King Stephen who ruled from 1135 to 1154. He seized the throne after the death of his uncle, Henry I. Henry's daughter, Matilda, was the next in line, but the nobles were not ready to have a queen ruling on her own as their leader. This resulted in a protracted civil war during which many very crude coins were issued.

This piece doesn't look like much, but compared to the other Stephen coins I've seen, which were little more than lumps of silver with something one them, this one is impressive.

Here is Henry II. His coins are a bit easier to find ...

Note that some old time collector punched "H II" at 11k on the obverse. I'm not that fussy about this collection, and this one was not very expensive.

Ouch, that coin is rough. If the others are worse, this must be a really hard area to collect...

Many of these coins make the Chain Cent look civilized. Heck, some of them make the Vermont landscape coins look like Proofs.

Funny, so am I ..... Still, your Stephan is the best I have seen.

I don't have that much experience with these coins so that sounds good! Still none of the Spephen coins I've seen almost did not fit in a 2x2.

Even the examples plated in the Spink editions are rough. I don't think it gets much better than this for strike. There are some with better centering, but little if any detail.
