Buyers Beware #2 Fake 16-d dime !

17 posts in this topic

I have noticed an obvious fake 1916-D Mercury dime listed on eBay. It is a recent listing with a raw 16-D. I will not disclose the sellers ID nor the item number. But I will state that ALL GENUINE 1916-D Mercury dimes have an open numeral 9 in the date. That is to say that the loop of the 9 DOES NOT TOUCH THE LEG OF THE 9. I will leave this information in your capable hands to sift through the listings on your own. If you are in the market for a 1916-D Mercury dime I would definitely leave this one alone. Also you might notice that the numeral 1`s in the date have vertical shifting and are not symetrical. Appearing to have a stair step effect. 893naughty-thumb.gif

There are so many fake 1916-D Mercury dimes out there. A majority of the raw ones I have seen on ebay are fake. Some have a tooled in D mint mark. Others have a glued or soddered on D. Here the size and shape of the D is usually wrong. Or they will place the D in the wrong location. There was one raw MS65 + FB 1916-D that look good at first. It was a die struck counterfeit made using a real dime as a template for the counterfeit dies. That coin was struck too sharply for any mercury dime.

Thanks for the two photos. I remember memorizing the diagnostics from a Coin World article in the past but now my memory, my memory, my memory fails me. smile.gif

I've been trying to get the first edition of the PCGS book with all of the diagnostics for the various key dates but it is extremely difficult to locate.

Thanks again for the education!

I can see what you mean about the nine's loop not touching. The counterfieters did good on the six, however.

Explain the dignostics for the "D" mintmark, please, gentlemen. thumbsup2.gif

Hello again EZ_E,

The best diagnostic for a genuine D mintmark is that the inside of the D looks more like a sideways triangle. Meaning that the left side of the inside follows the vertical bar of the D and the right side of the inside appears more as two angled lines forming somewhat of a triangle rather than a curve. By the way this is the same diagnostics for the 1911-D $2 1/2, 1911-D $5, 1914-D Lincoln cent, 1916-D and the 1921-D Mercury dime. The same mintmark punch was used for each of these numismatic rarities. Hope this was helpful. thumbsup2.gif
