Does the VAM 84 1878 7TF rev. of '78 have doubling on the Obverse?

4 posts in this topic

Please help my poor eyes. I was told I might have the 1878 7TF rev '78 VAM 84?

My question is: Does the VAM 84 have doubling of Liberty and E Pluribus Unum?

I was going to send my coin to Mr. Van Allen but if it is just the common VAM 84 there is no reason to bother him.

I think I might have a late die state.???

Monty, here it is according to the VAM Book:

Obverse - Slightly doubled LIBERTY shifted left, with surface around L flat and detail not brought out. Missing nostril. Doubled E, P, L, U, R, B and S in E PLURIBUS. Doubled 1, 2, 3, 4, 6 and 7 stars on left and all stars on right. Slanted dash below first 8 and die chip at top left inside of first 8 upper loop.

Reverse - D of DOLLAR broken at bottom with just two lines remaining. Die chip on eagle's right wing, 6th feather down and also next to body. Die overpolished with blank areas in eagle's left wing and tail feathers. Clash marks with faint remains of E of LIBERTY below tail feathers.

I hope this helps.

That's it! I couldn't find the "E" on the reverse along with a couple of other items, but it has to be a VAM 84! I am mostly a currency collector and it is hard for me to find things on a coin where I need a 20X glass! PCGS has the thing as a 8TF? At least I can count tail feathers...

Here are some photo's!

Consider yourself lucky; I need a Hubble Telescope!
