Cleaning coins a bad idea?

7 posts in this topic

I searched on "cleaning" and didn't get anything....and I read the FAQ's, etc.

I'm a rookie so this is probably a lame question.

I've heard that you shouldn't clean collectable coins.

Being from AZ I was lucky enough to find about 10 sets of

Wisconsin up/down leaf quarters.

I want to submit them to be graded by NGC.

Is there ANYTHING I can do to make them look as decent as possible before sending them in?

Thanks!

Hi Chris,

Welcome to the message boards here. Personally, I would not recommend that you attempt to clean any coins that have any intrinsic value without proper equipment and prior research. I am not sure what you are looking to do to your Wisconsin quarters prior to submission, a year old coin that is original and has no problems is not likely to receive any benefit from cleaning them anyway. Unless they have a residue or surface problem, which I would recommend be sent to NCS prior to NGC for grading, I would leave the coins alone.

Thanks,

It is unfortunately too often that we see at NCS the results of amateur cleaning attempts that have resulted in both severly diminished value and coins deemed to be "no grades" with NGC. I too can not recommend any home cleaning methods. There most likely is not much to conserve from your coin given how new it is. There may be residues as a result of the manufacture which would be important to remove before having your coin graded but there likely will be little ill effects of improper storage or handling. If you submit your coin to NCS, we can forward it to NGC for certification on your behalf whether or not any conservation work is required or performed.

I tried the link and it said forbidden. Guess I'll try again later since they might be working on the system tonight.

Does the site confirm you have received my order?

There was an error in the link in Chris' reply...try it now.

At this point the NCS site does not provide this information. However, we hope to offer this functionality for authorized dealers and Collectors Society members in the near future. Stay tuned.

Hello, Do I need to fill out 2 separate forms - one for NCS and one for NGC if I need to have one coin conserve out of about 10 that I am going to submit for grading. No sure how I would go about sending it as I like the whole package to be send at once and return as one package also.

You will need a separate NCS form for any coin you would like to have conserved. You can write a note in the margins of both forms that you would like to have them shipped together.
