Pat, I think it is a filled die chip. I have several that came earlier in the press run that show a distinct deterioration of the die in that area. There was also deterioration above and across the brim of the hat, mostly toward the back. I believe this to be so, because I also found a filled die chip on the back of the brim that is much larger than the one you saw. It looks like Condor Doo-Doo !

A "cud", to my understanding, can only occur at the edge of a coin, so that would not be a cud. It could be a die-chip though.
