This Trime showed up in the mail today

This was an ebay purchase with an average ebay picture. I had an idea the coin would be nice, but I wasn't sure. I decided to take a chance. 893crossfingers-thumb.gif

This is one of the best strikes I've seen on a type 1. I normally don't like fingerprints, but they don't usually come rainbow, so I can accept this one. grin.gif

The type 1 trimes don't usually have very good luster due to only a 75% silver content, but this one has nice luster.

It's in an old thick NGC MS64 slab and I think it would have a good shot at an upgrade, if I was so inclined.

I searched Ebay for your coin listing to see what the picture was like but I was unable to find it. Your pictures show a beautiful trime! The fingerprint you refer to is not at all obvious to me.

That's a really nice coin! thumbsup2.gif I agree with you that the remnants of the partial print do not hold the coin back in the eye appeal department. It also looks like it has a superior strike for the issue.

WOW! cool.gif That's a superb trime. Several things have kept me from that series, but a significant lack of well struck pieces has been on the top of the list. Not only is the strike incredible, but the color is fantastic. cloud9.gif I agree with all that the fingerprint is a no-nevermind, except hat it may have caused some of that incredible color! Looks like the coin has luster to spare.

When I look at these coins, I always look to see if the delicate rim of the C shows. It is almost always partial. There's also almost always great asymmetry in the strike that shows up in the stars and, on the obverse, shows up as a mushy part of the star that then blends with the field. Not with your coin! Sweet!

I also love the slant 5.

Great photo too. thumbsup2.gif The one on eBay sucks.

What a beautiful coin! If I were to take up another collecting series, I think it would be these attractive little coins, as yours shows just how good they can look! thumbsup2.gif

Thanks for all the comments on the coin (and my pictures cool.gif).

If you checked out the auction you will see that I paid the price for an average coin and ended up with a far above average piece. That's part of the ebay game I have to play since I rarely get to attend shows. Usually it's the other way around and I end up with an average or below average coin.

This one has two things the type 1s rarely come with: good strike and decent luster. Finding nice toning is not quite as difficult but I still think this one is far above average there too.

As Hoot mentioned, these often come unevenly struck with sharp star on one side and little flat blobs on the other. Most I've seen seem to either have a stong central shield area with letters that run into the rim or strong letters and missing shield lines. This one is evenly well struck on both sides.

I wish I could say that I hand selected this one out of a dealers inventory for it's special attributes with my superb eye for coins. But the reality is, I just got lucky bidding on a dark image. I could tell the central area was strong but I wasn't sure about the rims or the stars. I could also tell there was some toning that might be attractive but had no idea those colors were hiding in that image. The fact that it is in an old thick slab is just a bonus as the seller didn't use that to hype the coin. He did mention that he thought it was undergraded, but I see that so often I just ignore it usually.

I've added it to my registry set. If you want to see a typical poorly struck example check out my 1852. I started off a few years ago just buying examples for a type set. I didn't know I needed to be picky about strike and ended up with a couple of poorly struck, but interesting, examples. My 1856 is another poorly struck coin. I'm trying to be much more picky now, but it's hard with the typical ebay image.

Ebay has been a place I must go to myself for the same reason, few shows every year near me. confused-smiley-013.gif

Your coin was a very sweet find indeed, and even though you can't say you hand pick it, you can say a lot about what a great looking coin you got for the price! 893applaud-thumb.gif

Last summer I bought a type I trime for my type set off of Ebay, 1852 NGC64, paid to much for it, didn't really like it when I saw it in my hand, but really lost my mind when I got too lazy to return it in time. screwy.gif

I'll replace it when a nice one comes along some day and just suck up the loss getting rid of my dog and try to remember this in the future.
