Silver Eagle News?

26 posts in this topic

Shop at Home is hawking an announcement that on Sunday it will make an announcement that will change SE collecting for ever. Claims you might consider cracking out your graded slabs. Claims ALL SEs will become more valuable, whether graded or not.

Any ideas what this is about? They are talking about making some acrylic holders available. Could this be part of it?

The Mint isn't retiring the current design, is it?

Sure wish it was. tongue.gif

As far as Shop at Home goes, I simply don't get such wonderful entertainment on regular occasion! I'd love to watch this BIG announcement! laugh.gif And not only do I think everyone should crack their SAEs from slabs, but they should practice developing their own chop mark on the pieces they have! A modern culture of chop marks and chopped SAEs would make the entire series vastly more interesting! 893whatthe.gif

And they kept saying that that 2002, 2003, etc was the last year of the Sac $, too, since it was being replaced by a MLK Jr. dollar coin. This network is nothing but a shiester and I wouldn't place any credence in anything that they say whatsoever, let alone purchase their products!

I pretty much agree. And their prices on lower end coins are often a joke!

That said, I kinda wish I had recorded the comments made about this "big announcement" as it could be considered for a case of fraud, IMO. Telling potential buyers that the value of the coins being offered early this morning would be greatly increased due to the announcement tends to raise a red flag in my mind, though I am not a laywer.

HSN is using scare tactics to capitalize on some of the current market reports. Some investment analysts are predicting rising prices for silver bullion due to diminishing resources. Some believe that it could go higher than $50 an ounce.

No doubt that HSN will cite the fiasco when the Hunt Brothers caused the price of silver to skyrocket and people were turning in their silver coins for melt value .Though it is true that we will eventually deplete the sources for silver ore, HSN will probably try to dupe everyone into believing that it will happen overnight. And, they'll make this same claim for the next ten years!!! All the while, HSN will lead everyone to believe that their vastly, overinflated prices for any of their silver coin products is fair market value .

I heard the same thing when I was watching last monday night. They said there was going to be some kind of big announcement on sunday night that would instantly increase the amount of all SAE's.

Cutty , I don't get HSN and I would really like to know the earth-shattering news. If you happen to watch it, would you let those of us who don't get HSN know?

Thanks and welcome to the boards!

To be technical, it was not HSN but SaH. They are on too many channels around here, and have their own cable chanel as well.

I missed the "big announcement." Anyone catch it?

You really gotta wonder why so many people buy from them when we all know most items can be had for less from a local shop or eBay. Must be that convient "4-pay," which sounds nice until you realize they charge 4X what many others do. laugh.gif

I was able to catch the show online, and it was a big joke. They were offering a complete set of NGC MS69 Eagles (1986-2005) on a 6-month "autoship" for about $1,200. The first delivery would be 2002-2005 for $99.95. Successive deliveries were for 3 or 4 dates at a time. They were hyping the fact that you would be able to "freeze" the price for six months. Of course, what they didn't tell you was that the price varied for each group, and they were cautious not to show a close-up of any one group so that you could read the price. They were even hyping the fact that you would receive them in NGC storage boxes that are valued at $12.00. In actuality, you can get the slab boxes direct from NGC for half that.

Once again, they were just trying to rip everyone off. The same set of eagles can be purchased from APMEX for $660.00.

How does this make the value of all SAE increase? Why would that make me want to crack open my current slabs? THAT sounds like fraud since it was said as a selling point of the set at that time.

About the ONLY thing they appear to have been truthful about is that the set they were offering at the time is no longer $900.

SaH - the MCI worldCom of the coin collecting community! makepoint.gif

Scroll , it can't be considered fraud to hype something just to get people to watch the show. Unethical? Probably! I guess they figure that SAE's will increase in value just because they will find enough suckers to fall for their spiel. Then, they will again hype the dramatic rise in value 27_laughing.gif27_laughing.gif by citing their own sales records.

What could give cause for collectors to crack their SAE's? I have no doubt that somewhere down the road they will use analyst's predictions of rising silver prices as fuel for their own "gas"!

How is it not a lie to claim you'd want to crack open your slabs? How does their announcement raise the value of all SAEs, graded or not?

I still just don't get how these statements aren't fraud. frustrated.gif

You gotta love their nickel roll offer. Charge twice what you could buy directly from the mint and out of the goodness of their hearts they'll cherry pick out all those nasty high grade examples. screwy.gif

Well, ok I guess they can't do that if the rolls are mint sealed. Or can they??

"How is it not a lie...."

Right or wrong, aren't they entitled to their opinioin? Unethical? Yes!

"How does their announcement...."

Simple, they raise their prices, and the logic from their pea-brained heads means that raises the value of your coins.

"I still just don't get how these statements aren't fraud."

There is a big, big difference between expressing an opinion and fraud. They exaggerated to attract viewers, but they didn't lie when they said that their prices will probably go higher for the SAE's. If they had made the claim that APMEX, Coast to Coast, Paul Sims or any other coin dealer charges more than they do, then you might have a case for fraud. Let's suppose they said, "Right now, you can't get this set anywhere at this unbelievable price!" It would be totally true unless QVC or HSN was running the same promotion at the exact same time . An hour later is a different story. MS69's graded by PCGS is a different story.

You can read all you want "between the lines"; you can use your knowledge of the actual market trends to debunk their statements; but you can't prove fraud when they haven't compared their prices to anyone's but their own.

"....can't do that if the rolls are mint sealed. Or can they?"

Would it surprise anyone if you discovered they owned a printing company? (You will note that I was careful to phrase this in the form of a question to avoid being sued for libel.) I don't know whether, or not, they own a printing company.

I'm sure that they spend many hours going over what they will say on the show to avoid what they might get in court.

I wouldn't be surprised if they could get sued over some of the stuff that comes out over their closed caption, but nobody seems to be able to translate it into English (or any other known language for that matter) if you'll recall the thread about that. laugh.gif

Yea I guess I see your point. And they will continue to be less than truthful as long as some poor sap has a credit card number for them. Christo_pull_hair.gif

They started charging more. laugh.gif

Also, they put in a new autopay program with different amounts so that you really don't know how much you're paying unless you can add it up, since the price is locked only for 6 months.

But, Scroll, what was their rational for charging more? Just hyping greater demand or was it something more profound?

EZ , by "profound" do you mean that deep, brown, smelly, squishy stuff that requires one to wear a pair of waders?

They were just blowing their own horn and hoping the suckers would answer the call. (See my earlier post #743525. Please note that I had a "typo" which I can no longer change. The SaH set sells for $1000, not $1200.)

Yep, that about sums it up. Anyone, I repeat, anyone who buys coins from the shopping networks will lose. Period. Their sales tactics are based upon mere hype alone, salted with alot of mistruths. The shows should issue a disclamer such as: This show is for entertainment purposes only and should by no means be taken seriously.

Anyway, this is my not so humble opinion based upon experience.

".....anyone who buys coins from the shopping networks will lose."

There is only one person I know who got lucky. About 15 years ago, my Mom saw an offer for 30 Morgans for $199 on QVC(?). She knew I liked the Morgans and my birthday was near, so she bought them. All of them were common dates except one......an 1879-S/78 Rev that is very close to MS63!

Other than that, I agree with you. It would be like hoping to find an MS70 in a Mint bag.

I could swear I saw on air they're charging $1,200 now, up from $900. Even on Sun morning on their website was $900.

Today I just checked the website and on one page it states $999.95 for the set, but when you click on the link it states $1,149.95.

It was the first item on their page, Monday or Tuesday, at $1000.
