Found a Radical Double Die Rev Lincoln Cent

5 posts in this topic

I found a Lincoln Cent with what looks like a really misaligned doubling on the revese. I worked up a hypothesis as to how it came to be. Here goes.

The working die was first hubbed with at least 50% misalignment.

Like this:

Then finding the error it was taken and ground severely (as evident many deep scracthes in the fields) and rehubbed in the correct position.

But they did not get all of the first hubbing off the die and the letters of " E PURIBUS UNUM" amd some other detail remain.

I showed it to David Lang at Long Beach and he said that it counld not be attributed with out some org. like CONECA say so.

I took it to ANACS and had Tim Hargis look at it. He said it looked good but it needed a expert to attribute it.

So I submitted the coin and wait and see.

Stupid question, perhaps - why do you think it was from such a radical hub or die doubling and not from a double strike on the coin? Could there be other explanations? It'll be interesting to find out. Did you send it to someone in CONECA?
