coins as an investment????????????????????????????

6 posts in this topic

as of late i was asked

"what are the best coins to collect looking apon the money spent on them as an investment?"

well not being a prophet or able to see which series will be in special favor in ten or 20 years i hesitate to speak with any assumed authority

but some series that command high prices today will not be in great demand or favor ten years hence and some coins that are really undervalued and out of favor so to speak as of todays time frame will then be worth much more cloud9.gif

but it caN BE REASONABLY BE ASSURED OF ONE THING ............

the classic series of 1820's to 1915 of gold silver and copper/copper nickel in choice proof and business strike condition the private issues of gold coins of the usa will for the most part never be less than they are at the present time 893applaud-thumb.gif

AND ONE THING FOR SURE......

the collector should NOT consider his collection as a diamond mine from which he expects to reap fat dividends

the real collector does not buy his coins as he does with stocks and bonds as paying investments 893whatthe.gif

THE JOY OF POSSESSING SOMETHING THAT NO ONE ELSE HAS IS THE DIVIDEND HE WANTS hail.gif

No offense intended, but any item where you must pay at least a 10% spread to get it over what you sell it for right after the purchase cannot considered to be an investment.

I wouldn't call anything a safe bet at this time with the way everything is at the "insane" mark.

If someone wishes to attempt to pursue coins as an investment, I would have to say that true Key dates might be the only somewhat "safe" avenue.

Buy what you like with money you can afford to lose. thumbsup2.gif

Which, by extension really translates to buy NOTHING unless it is priced at a "no lose" price.

The rapid escalation (not appreciation) of coins in the past 2 years is very near insanity and could not POSSIBLY be more of a "CAUTION" sign.

This isn't how "collectors" behave, though. It has happened all too often in the past. Just when it looks as if there is no top, you find out you're AT it.
