Here`s my lastest aquisition. As most of you know I prefer circulated key dates. Opinions are welcomed, be they pro or con. Photo`s will be attached to this post and the following post.

What caught my eye immediately on the obverse is the condition of the four stars from 9 o'clock to 11 o'clock. Quite a lot of detail, considering the others. On the reverse, my eye was drawn to the denticles. The pic is a little dark on the left, but they look awfully good when compared to the obverse.

I wonder what year it was that this coin was taken out of circulation and preserved in someone's collection?

Nice find!

That's a great looking '85. Very tough to find in the middle circulated grades and not beaten to death. Great original surfaces that did not get scrubbed. thumbsup2.gifthumbsup2.gif

Boy ! Tough to find is right, I`ve seached magazines and web sights for a long time trying to find a suitable piece with sufficient details and certified by a reputable service. smile.gif

VF20 obv, VF30 rev... I'd put it at VF25 (and a sweet one at that).

Here`s the grade Mel. Photo attached.

Doggone it! sumo.gif I was under a tad! sorry.gif

Fabulous coin, no matter what it was graded. More character than any unc. I've seen in that issue and nicer than any other circulated '85 I've laid eyes on.

I absolutely love that coin. I think the grade's a tad "optimistic", but does it really matter? The 1885 and 1886 are way undervalued on the grey-sheet in grades between F-12 and EF-40. Strangely, in my experience, it is overvalued on the g/s in G/VG, and in MS-63 and higher grades. But those collectors who have tried to put together a Liberty nickel set in VF/EF know that the 1885 is tougher in that grade than it is in MS-63.

A number of series have the type of "junk or unc" population distribution that James is writing of, and the other Barber series (remember, the Liberty nickel is a Barber creation) are similar in that true F12-EF40 pieces can be very scarce to find.
