23 posts in this topic

hi,

for a while now im looking to get ungraded gold indian just to finally get to see the stars smirk.gif

so far everytime i was ready to do so.... some voice in my head stop me just before clicking that "final approve" (counterfeits, missleading pictures, or even just the simple sence.... if it was that good it was slabbed by now, etc etc....)

in any case this morning the voice wasn't there.... and i did end up getting this coin (at list on paper as i dont posess it in my hand yet)

I assumed ms64 for this.... with a vision, hope and a prair for an ms66....

anyone like to share his thoughts ???

She's beautiful, one of my favorites. The stars are nice to see, in 1912 the number of stars around the edge increased to 48 after Arizona and New Mexico became states. Look carefully at the high points on her cheek and the mint luster between the tail feathers and "ICA" on the reverse and the midpoint of the left leg.

Although I've always liked these coins (who doesn't?), have you ever noticed that the Indian looks more like an Italian model with a headdress on than an Indian?

But it looks like a great coin.

If you want to see the edge on a legit coin why not buy a slabbed one and crack it? 893scratchchin-thumb.gif

As to your coin, the picture isn't really good enough. Can you take another one with better lighting. A typical 12-P in, say, MS63 will look similar to this one:

James, isn't that called artistic license ?

It's called "Teddy Roosevelt told Augustus Saint-Gaudens to put a headdress on his rendition of Nike." laugh.gif It worked out to make for a very pretty coin. Unfortunately, Charles Barber messed with it in 1908 and made it less pretty, but it was still pretty.

i'll scan it as soon as i'll have it in my hand. probeblly later on this week.

as far as I know is the french chick miss liberty... which i dont find attractive at all... i would assume the designer was straching her fat face as much as he can to a native skinny look without getting into a political crise.

which happened anyways around the "motto". but thats only after the coin was issued.

Sorry to push this thread a tad off-topic, but is the Indian on the Buffalo nickel pretty well recognized as the most realistic depiction on an American coin? Or maybe it would be the standing Indian on the Oregon Trail half?

I don't know which is most realistic but the Buff, $2.5 or $5 Indian gold along with the Oregon Trail are the only ones I know of with a real native Americans. Can't think of another right now...

can it fall for just another au62 ???

58 ?? now is time to freak out makepoint.gif

i dont really know those fine grades as i usually collect au-ms62 for this series....

and back to the old Q.... i've seen au64 before , but do they really make au65's ?

how much would cost me to slab this ?

any word of advise or idea for grading this ???

I'm totally confused....

if i just had to look at this coin as any other coin,

i would say au58 right away...

but as i do have those with much less eye apeal, and even more wear, and they still slabed ms62.

so i would think this should slabed ms 64-5 ?????

Are there any luster breaks on the Indian's cheek or on the eagle's shoulder? Your pictures only show me an AU58 coin, but then, with full luster it could be MS60.

893scratchchin-thumb.gifmm... last night i went to my friends house "the rich boy"

he had PCGS slabing MS64 for his 1932 $10.

it looks identical to my coin as far as lustre, color, and eye apeal.

the only diff is, he have a cupper spot on the hair dress feather, and a litlle bit MORE wear on the wing....

he jumped out of his chair stating its an MS65+

me.... im just lost as usual...

foreheadslap.gifis wierd 4 me cuz,

i was looking at many many pictures and didnt find even single coin with full wing

accept the 1907 issue. (was looking at ms64-66 both pcgs and ngc)

maybe the whomever change the design and ad the motto kinda screw up the coin ? obviously he made it more define on most part, but is it posibille that there

was no metal left because of the new design to fill up the top spot ? or just poor work on the last final fine details ?

maybe there's a book about the mint process for that series ?

like how they actually mint those and how they process the coin after ?

i mean.... after they "stemp it" did they just slide them on kinda "flat bed" and drope to a bag, or maybe the bottum placente kinda hit the coin in order to relise it ? do they make them with same placente or they have like 10 or 50 of those working in parallel ?

The problem with your pictures is that (I'm guess here) they don't show the luster well. Hoot is right that it's probably technically AU (so what?) but that is probably not what it will grade. It depends on the luster really....unless I can see it in person I would never be able to tell. If it has luster that looks like mine above it could go 64. confused-smiley-013.gif

Like Jom said, it is hard to tell unless you are grading it in person. The marks make it look like a 64.

That link to a NCG 65 gold was a terrible coin for a 65. It should be downgraded in a review.
