Full time graders are not allowed to buy and sell coins.

We do have some outside consultants that we occasionally use, and we have some part-time graders that are also coin dealers. For these guys, we have an anti-self interest policy which basically says these guys can't render an opinion on something they own or have a financial interest in.

I have owned David Hall Rare Coins, a botique dealership specializing in very high end rare coins, since 1977. I really not a grader at PCGS, but I do render my opinion whenever asked. I have the same anti-self interest rules as everyone else, but I take it a little farther. David Hall Rare Coins does not submitt coins it owns to PCGS for grading, so there's never a question about conflict of onterest...we just don't use the service.

Thanks,

David

I asked this question on the pcgs forum but he didn't quiet satisfy me with his answer on himself.DO you people know the exact way the relation works.thanks 893scratchchin-thumb.gif

How about: Does DHRC have any deals with submitters to purchase coins that grade a certain grade at pre-determined prices that the submitter submits in bulk?

If DHRC doesn't submit his own coins for grading then how come he only sells PCGS graded coins? I know he doesn't just buy PCGS graded coins???

To be fair, I believe think Jim Halperin and / or Greg Rohan have something like a 25% interest in NGC and they send coins to NGC for grading. A possible difference is that David Hall is / can be on site with PCGS while this is not the case with the folks at Heritage.

(((I believe think Jim Halperin and / or Greg Rohan have something like a 25% interest in NGC and they send coins to NGC for grading)))

But also, Heritage sells coins in PCGS holders, as well as ANACS, ICG and NGC, and even uncertified coins. I have never seen a coin sold by David Hall Rare Coins in a holder other than PCGS.

I don't know if it really makes any difference, but it sure is a wild coincidence that DHRC has never, ever ever ever ever ever in ten years found a coin nice enough in an NGC holder to place into their inventory.

Personally, I guess I really don't care what the relation between David Hall and PCGS is, on either a professional or intimate basis, since my focus is always on the coin. But I would be concerned about how it might skew others' perception of a conflict of interest, as MidwestCoin has pointed out.

I also try to buy the coin and not the holder! But the connection DH has with PCGS is always in the back of my mind I guess. Maybe that is why I always end up buying mostly NGC graded coins. NGC's customer service aint bad either.

Oops that is two aints, now Three! foreheadslap.gif

Interesting point, about how you've bought more coins in NGC holders, etc. I did a quick, but semi-accurate count of my purchases for the last couple of months, and of those certified, I have bought:

38 coins in NGC holders

1 coin in NCS

28 coins in ANACS holders (14 in the past week!)

11 coins in PCGS holders

1 coin in other holders (SEGS)

I like to think I have no holder bias, but probably everyone does, even if unconciously. But basically half of the encapsulated coins I've bought have been NGC! This may be a reflection of more coins being certified by them, but there sure are a lot of nice coins in NGC holders....

I think that Mr. Hall keeps ethics in mind when he runs his business.Even though it would be easy for him to take a coin to PCGS and tell them to put a higher grade then it really is,he always seem to have accurately graded coins. While people who know nothing of coins would purchase overgraded coins just because they're in PCGS holders,he keeps in mind the many experienced numismatists who would diss him silly. While he himself might not ever take a coin to PCGS to grade(he does have people that work for him!),I doubt he interferes with the grading process.

But then again there are alot of overgraded 1901-S quarters 893whatthe.gif

First off, I'm not a PCGS lackey but I think that David Hall deserves his place in numismatic history with the appropriate respect. He has done more to influence the hobby than most anyone.

Granted, he has had his share of scrutiny which has exposed negative behavior but that's common in the coin game.

He may claim to have no influence with PCGS in obtaining his inventory/grades but this is the real world and we all know better.

Personally, I would most likely never purchase a coin from DHRC's because they seem to be overpriced.

I like the statement quoted above about him walking the straight and narrow with accurately graded coins. It is just good business sense since he would be slammed big-time otherwise.

So in summary:

1) David Hall deserves appropriate respect for his contributions to the hobby.

2) Yes he is a business man first and can't always be trusted.

3) Buy the coin and not the holder.

Only if you send me a written apology in triplicate! poke2.gifgrin.gif

Well, I've done reconsidered. I reckon that I can't keep a good man such as yourself down so ... er, um ... OK then, you have my permission.

I just noticed across the street that David Hall made a post asking everyone what they thought about the "speared Buffalo" variety and if they should recognize the variety.

makes me wonder how many of them he has 893scratchchin-thumb.gif
