melt value versus spot price?

17 posts in this topic

If something has a melt value of $36.00 why is the spot price $6.91 ? What does this mean? Thanks in advance. grin.gif

I'd pay $36.00 to melt some people that I'd value at no more than $6.91.

That help?

Mel , there is a pretty good explanation of this by one of our own, GDJMSP, on Coin Talk Forum, 4/6/2004. I just stumbled across this site when I searched "melt value".

Melanie,

The spot price refers to the going rate for one ounce of the metal. The reason something could have a melt value higher than the spot price is because it has more than one ounce of the metal in it.

In the case of the example you gave, at a spot price of $6.91 the item would have slightly more than 5 ounces of the metal in it.

Hope this helps.

John

If your flu gets nasty enough, and the resulting fever high enough, you may be able to tell us, Hoot, exactly how much melt value your denatured proteins will have. thumbsup2.gif

Flu shots are just a con that the AMA tries to foist on the public just to make more money. Every time I got one, I got sick. I quit getting the shots and I haven't been sick for 5 years. I'll agree with Mel on the fluids, though. Grand Marnier, Dewars on the rocks, or Rumple Minze with Bud chasers.

Chris, I will agree that the flu shot is debatable but it is best to act on the side of caution. The flu shot is intended for those who have low immune systems, people who work around the sick or travel and are exposed to different strains. It is also based on the same principal as all immunization. Dead strains, live strains and so forth. It really doesn't make much money if any. But you are right that some people get really sick from them and thus shouldn't take them. I know several people who work in the health field that either cant take them or won't take them. I am just one of those weirdo's that believes the benefit outweighs the risk insane.gif

Sorry, Hoot, but I really couldn't take a chance transporting that much alcohol across state lines.

There, I got my foot out of my mouth. It's just that, here, in south Florida we have 500 doctors for every resident and a Walgreen's on every corner. I'm beginning to regret my feeble attempt at sincerity when I extended get-well wishes to Hoot. I sure got us off on a tangent, didn't I?

Did you get a chance to read the post on Coin Talk Forum about "melt, spot & market" pricing?
