Type Set holders.....

8 posts in this topic

my son and I have a Dansco 7070 with gold. He is down (or shall I say I am down) to needing only 1 seated dollar and the majority of the gold to complete the entire set.

It is quite a nice looking set with some of the coins actually being worth some decent money.

I am curious what other types of holders there are available for such a set? A large plastic one would be sort of neat instead of a book.

Wow! Sweet collection, Goose. Could you post a picture of what the Dansco 7070 looks like. Was it issued in the '50's? Does it go back to 1800 or the late 1700's?

I collect types in the new Dansco type album that has all issues from 1800 on.

I just got an 1886 proof only PCGS PF 66 three-cent nickel in the mail yesterday. Talk about nice!! There is also a subtle glacier ice-blue toning on both sides.

Goose, the reason that I collect using the Dansco album is for presentation. I enjoy looking at my types together as such because it gives the big picture of US coinage. So, for my needs, I prefer the book form.

Eventually, when I satisfactorily complete my set, I'll send them all in to PCGS for grading but that comes later.

Capital Plastics (Capitalcollectorplastics.com) has several different configuations of Type Set holders. These are laminated acrylic with a white or black center layer (with prebored holes), sandwiched between (2) clear layers. They are quite attractive and protect your coins very well. They are somewhat expensive though.

I have several of these for completed modern sets (i.e. SBA and Ike Dollars) that I do not want to have certified.

You can buy Eagle Coin holders of varying denominations to accomodate the different sizes of coins in your type set, and then display them however you choose. The advantage is that each coin is holdered individually, yet the order in which you display them can be changed at will. And you will still get a nice, consistent overview of your coins. The holders used to come in black and white, but only black is now available. If you glue each holder closed, they are a very safe, and extremely coin-friendly way to store your treasures.

Virtually anything is better than the Mint holders. They will cloud proof coins under many conditions, leaving them with an unattractive blue haze. I'm not sure if the haze is damaging in the long-term (I once sent a coin from the early 1970s to NCS for the problem, which was readily fixed), but I would not leave the issue to chance. Cap Plastics holders also look much classier. Just MO.

I have had the same blue haze thing happen to US Mint proof coins in their original packaging. I have an Ike proof that is a nice, sky blue color.

Capital Plastics holders are inert and stable. I have had coins in specific holders for as long as ten years with no effect to the coin color or surfaces. Some coins have toned slightly in the holders, but these specific coins had already started to tone when I placed them in the holders. I assume from the cost and feel, that Capital Holders are probably acrylic.

Thanks. I was sorta hoping that after all this time the mint would have made a decent enough plastic holder to keep me from having to crack the thing open - especially for proof coins. (sigh)

I haven't liked Cap holders in the past because my coins tend to rattle, but I suppose they are safe enough. Certainly better than being blue over having a blue coin! frustrated.gif

So what kind of glue should I use to seal the set in a Cap holder?
