Need VAM help - Auburn show was great

11 posts in this topic

There are sixteen 7/8 varieties.

Your obverse is a II/I variety: the ear, doubled stars, and doubled Liberty are diagnostics. This narrows your coin down to seven 7/8 varieties as all of the other have the II reverse.

In matching up the B/A reverses, only VAM 38 seems to have the feathers in the same position as your coin. The VAM book numbers the 7 feathers from the viewer's right to left. You have bold feathers between feathers 2-3, 3-4, and 5. There is another weak feather under 4-5. Finally, if you look carefully under feather 6, there is evidence of a parallel line which is a fifth faint feather.

The five tail feathers on the reverse are very pronounced on the other examples that I have seen (including the two that I own). Your example may be an early die state or may have been subjected to die polishing (that area of the coin is semi-prooflike). Perhaps another person can help with this explanation.

Oh, for the buffalo nickel enthusiasts here, I saw Sadysta1's latest toned "monster".......shoot, I forget the date.

Remind me please someone! Anyway, the color was quite nice, and the coin was very, very cool looking. Someone's going to be happy I believe with that one.

Also, please notice the pretty toned Washington Quarter that I sold to Thomasz WAY TOO CHEAP. That was pretty much going to be my second or third best score of the day and was salivating over getting that one slabbed. Then along comes Thomasz and gives me those puppy dog eyes..........I HAD to sell the coin to him. wink.gifsmile.gif

I actually found a bunch of nice coins at the show, and really couldn't believe how busy this show was. Out of the 3 legitimate local shows I attend (60+ tables), this is the one that is usually on the bubble for me. I can actually talk myself out of going to this show even once I've hit the highway (breakfast is ALWAYS good wink.gif). It was packed!

I also made a "mistake" purchase. Ever do that? Think you find a decent coin, looks good at the show, get home and you want to scream! Purchased a nice looking Vermont Commem. and missed some hairlines in a small area in the obv. field. Should still slab ms/63, but not the PQ coin I thought, and I should have paid less for it. May find it's way into my Commem album instead. Maybe one shot at grading...............

I saw sadysta1's coins in hand at Auburn. Very nice toners. Nice doubiling on that "R" in the Morgan.

I stayed away from anything expensive and bought several raw moderns. Mostly (5-6FS) Jeffs, that will be heading to NGC eventually along with a WWII silver Jeff with nice rainbow toning on the reverse, and a couple of FB Roosies.

I had a great time at the show and it's nice that Auburn isn't far from where I live. laugh.gif
