Barber expertise sought (no, I don't mean for a haircut....)

Suppose you have a client putting together a type set, and he wants just one Barber coin to represent all the series. It needs to be the generally most-available and best produced coin out there, and grade around MS-63.

For example, the 1881-S Morgan is the primo representative for that series, because they were unfailingly well produced, and exist in the billions (or so it seems). I'm talking about the kind of representative where someone mearly has to say "1881-S Morgan", and your mind's eye instantly calls up a gemmy unc.

WHICH Barber coin would be the right choice? To my minimal experience with the three series, it seems like the 1916-D quarters are around in abundance. But is there that "one" Barber coin that is always out there in endless supply? It can be a dime, quarter or half, so please give me some leads!

IMO all three series have several common dates, but there is NO such thing as a mint state Barber coin in endless supply. In quarters, the 16-D is by far the most common date and has the benefit of usually having great eye appeal as most examples come from frosty, well preserved mint rolls. That would be my vote. In the dimes, many of the 1909-1914 P-mints are are common in mint state, as well. Yes, the 1892's are conisdered type coins in all three series but I have found them to be scarcer than many other so-called type coins.

What you mention fits my observations as well, right down to the same issue, the 1916-D Barber quarter. Basically, I'm trying to determine what single Barber coin would best represent ALL the Barber series, and I think you've confirmed my opinion for me. Thanks! And thanks to everyone for all the well thought out examples!!

James,

Just a thought on another option...look at some highend AU pieces (53-58) in the halve's,you could find a real nice coin, and date, for less money and just as nice eye appeal.

Sometime's those AU 58's are MS 63 looking with slight rub.

Just a thought.
