My new article on PVC contamination of coins - critiques please!

5 posts in this topic

I added a new article to my website, and it is regarding PVC and it's effects on coins. As you may know, I recently purchased a small part of a vintage collection, and the article reveals some good information (I hope) on the problems of PVC.

Note: it's in .PDF format, 404Kb, and should be printed out only in color, or viewed on-screen.

Nice article James. thumbsup2.gif No doubt, air-tight outer sleeve or not, the row of dimes that toned darly were receiving a greater supply of oxygen than those that had lesser toning. Too often we are fooled into thinking that certain containment is "air tight" when, in fact, molecular movement can readily occur across microscopically imperfect seams or even through various films. Physics and chemistry at work.

The cellulose acetate films (Cellophane) that were used by the mint back in the silver Mint and Proof set era, allow molecular exchange of many gas molecules. These would include sulpher dioxide gas from the paper interacting with humidity.
