Morgan Mint Mark ???

3 posts in this topic

Hi, I'm quite new to the hobby and have recently puchased an 1884 Morgan. Upon examination, I noticed that the supposed mint mark in the reverse side between the letter D and O of Dollar looks more like a full circular feature (filled circle) instead of a supposed letter mint mark. I have read topics on filled mint marks from other coins but is this also possible to Morgans ? How then would we know what place of origin would the coin come from with these filled mint marks?

PC, I assume that you are referring to an 1884-O Morgan. According to the VAM Book (Comprehensive Catalogue and Encyclopedia of Morgan and Peace Dollars)......NOW YOU KNOW WHY THEY CALL IT THE "VAM BOOK".......it may be a VAM-5R Filled O. According to the book, it would not ordinarily command a premium value.

The answer is yes you can have filled mint mark. If the mark is a circle I would think the mint mark would be "o" for New orleans!?!? What power glass do you have?
