NGC related questions

2 posts in this topic

I have a couple of questions regarding NGC:

1. Is it possible to remove a coin from an NGC slab and replace it with a lower grade coin? How safe are slabs and how easily can be opened without any visual evidence?

2. I see a number on the label which I assume is something like a serial. How can I trace that this is a valid serial of a coin graded by NGC? Is there a database of graded coins or a complete registry? And finally what this serial means? For example how can I identify the year that the coin was graded?

Best regards

John

Thank you for your inquiries. Answers are below in blue:

NGC holdered coins are sonically sealed and therefore one would typically find evidence of tampering if it had occurred. However, if you feel you have a coin that may have been tampered with, please feel free to send it to NGC for review. We will be happy to examine the coin at no charge.

The number on the label is commonly referred to as the certification number. The certification number is made up of the invoice number on which the coin was submitted and the line item of that coin. For example, if you submitted invoice # 1234567, the certification number of the first coin would be 1234567-001. The year a coin was graded is not information we include on a coin’s certification label.

Members of the Collectors Society with paid full featured accounts can verify an NGC certification number by selecting "cert number lookup" from the Coins menu after logging in. If you are not a Collectors Society Member, you may contact customer service by calling 1.800.NGC.COIN. A representative will be happy to help you with that inquiry.

Please let me know if you need any further assistance.

Best regards,

Dena
