I have inherited some coins (mostly American silver dollars, some gold American, Mexican, other misc gold coins). What should I do with them? How do I find an honest opinion on their value, and whether I should sell them or hold them. If they have investment value, how do I properly store and care for them? I would be most grateful for any info you experts can give a novice. Thank you!

Hi,

I would recommend you pick up a few books on coins from your local coin shop or library, a good all-around book for U.S. coins for you might be Yeoman's Guide Book commonly called the Redbook because of it's red cover. You could also ask some of our members here for specific book recommendations.

I also suggest that you follow the link HERE and find the closest NGC authorized dealer or two if you are interested in placing values on your coins and/or help getting that information. I would recommend talking with several sources before making any decision with your coins, be it buy, sell, or hold. Regarding the safe storage of your collection, one of the most important factors is a stable environment for storage, ideally room temperature with low humidity. Discussions with board members or perusing a local coin dealer's shop to get an idea what type of storage method would best fit you and your collecting would also benefit you.

Of course these are just starting points, but I will be glad to help as I can with your future questions. Posting to the general coin forums and meeting some of our members is another great way to get advice and gain alot of insight about your coins.

Thanks,
