I wanted to post this here also for those of you that don't venture across the street so I could get everyone's opinion that wished to comment.

One set of pics shot in sunlight one under desklamp. It is a touch dark but it sure looks original and "wholesome" to my untrained eyes. The bottom set of pics is pretty close to color in hand.

The next picture is a FA02 that is/was offered to me by another dealer. The Fa2 is priced 44% less than the G4.

I could not get it to post so here is a link directly to the pic.

I don't think the FA02 would have been a wise choice - too much missing detail. I think you made the right choice with the G04.

I'll tell you about the 1796 quarter that rocks my world: it is the redbook's mintstate example with beautiful concentric cobalt blue toning. Ooh baby, I'm in love but, as is typical, love comes with a price and a hefty price at that!

I find it amazing at the prices realized for this type coin especially in view that there was a realitively large hoard of mint state coins. But it is an awesome design and denomination that is highly in demand but why would a coin with a fairly high population bring over a hundred grand? Think of the 19th century proof rarities with extremely low populations with a relatively low price tag... Although quickly vanishing, there are still some great opportunities in the numismatic community.

Goose, you sure do come up with some great material! thumbsup2.gif Do you mind telling me about how much the asking price was on the FA02?

it's not an asking price......THE price on the Fa02 is 4200.00. makepoint.gif brutal, huh!

Hey Goose, Great coin! Bret could have gotten you one real cheap. He's been carrying it in his pocket for over a year now. On top of it, it's a neat counter-stamped piece!

I think the counter-stamp is from City Organization of the People of Yap.

Goose! I can only see one set of images! What's going on here? 893whatthe.gif

As for the FA2 vs G4 debate, I think that this issue is best obtained in attractive G4 over attractive FA2. This is because the current price structure has the coins valued relatively close to one another; there is a bid price for G4 in the Greysheet whereas there is no bid price for FA2; many collectors have a basal grade that they will not dip below and I have found that this is typically AG3; and, finally, a G4 1796 quarter usually has significantly more meat on it than a FA2.

The TPGs grade fast-and-loose for this coin, with many FA2 and AG3 pieces being slabbed that should actually be bagged. By obtaining a G4 piece you can most times avoid nefarious surface issues and end up with a largely original piece.

It's tough for me to tell from the one set of images supplied, but the coin definitely fits within the G4 grade, as defined by the TPGs, and pushes the envelope to G6. There are areas of significant detail on both obverse and reverse, this is nice to see as many of these pieces are near slicks on one side of the coin. The color looks good, the only thing that might have happened to it is a light soap and water bath, but there are no problems evident here.

I like it and would call it original everyday. thumbsup2.gif
