F.U.N. Show – A Flurry of Activity & A Hot Market

The F.U.N. show proved to be a hurricane-like whirlwind of activity this year, with high attendance, a great mix of dealers, and nearly constant lines at the NGC booth. Dealers and collectors from the cold and snowy parts of the country were greeted with warm weather and a hot coin market.

The F.U.N. show, which is hosted by the Florida United Numismatist, is always one of the biggest shows of the year. The year the show was held at the Fort Lauderdale Convention Center from Jan 13th through 16th.

“This was probably the busiest F.U.N. show I have ever attended,” commented Sarah Martin of NGC. “We were busy talking to dealer and collectors, accepting submissions and handing back show grading submissions nearly non-stop the entire show.”

The volume of business is a clear sign that the coin market is still booming. “We saw lots of activity in all areas of the market, from type coins to modern, US and World coins as well as tokens and medals,” says Scott Heller, NGC Director of Operations.

In addition to the brisk business of submissions at the NGC and NCS table, three exhibits proved popular with the collectors and dealers. At the NGC booth attendees could view first hand the BRS Legend Collection of matte proof and satin proof gold dated 1908 to 1915.

The BRS collection was described by most who examined it as “simply amazing,” with its 32 proofs of phenomenal quality. Among the highlights from collection are 1909 and 1910 half eagles grading Proof 67* and the truly remarkable 1912 matte proof double eagle that grades Proof 68*.

Also at the NGC booth was an exhibit of the many types of US and World coins, tokens and medals that NGC certifies along with the various certification products currently offered by NGC. Along side the single coin holder, visitors could view NGC’s Multi-coin holder, GSA certification, Photo Proof and Photo Certificates, and numerous publications including the Modern Coin Grading Guide and VarietyPlus Guide. Another popular publication at the table was the new “Numismedia Price Guide.”

In the exhibit section of the bourse floor, there were quite a few well presented collections of coins. One of the nicer ones, in our opinion, was a collection of NGC certified Norse American Medals.

For Mark Salzberg, NGC’s president, one of the highlights of the show were the remarkable Brasher Doubloons. “Even after all these years in the coin business, you can’t help but get excited when you are looking at coins as rare and important as those two doubloons. They are amazing,” said Salzberg.

The doubloons were part of “The Gold Rush Collection,” which was presented by Heritage Numismatic Auctions. The first specimen was the 1742 dated Lima Style Doubloon “Discovery Specimen” in NGC XS40. The second specimen was the 1787 Brasher Doubloon with “EB” punch on wing in NGC AU55. These two pieces garnered a lot of attention during the auction and subsequently on the bourse floor by local television news media.

Next year the F.U.N. Show, which is held in January will be held at the Orlando Convention Center.

Upcoming shows that NGC will be attending include the invitation only Trade and Grade in Las Vegas and the always busy, Long Beach Coin and Collectibles show. The Long Beach show will be held Feb 24th through 27th at the Long Beach Convention Center in California.

NGC will offer on-site grading the first couple of days of the show. So if you have coins you want graded, we highly recommend attending arriving early.

Our next show appears to be LONG BEACH, which should be another busy show. I hope some of you will be able to attend the show and stop by the table.

Regards,

Brian

Be on the lookout for this person cameron.jpg who will come up to the table begging for sample slabs and then whine when the slab insert number isn't low enough. Make sure that any sample slabs that are numbered -001 go to his friend who will torture him with it the entire show. devil.gif

cameron.jpg has actually has submitted some coins to NGC, are you sure that's not worth a sample slab or two?

Personally, I would like to pick up a dsiplay box at the Long Beach show (hint hint).

Sure it it, but cameron.jpg doesn't just want a sample slab, he wants a low numbered sample slab. Last time when he got #097 and whined, he asked for #001. He was told by an "NGC employee" that #001 is given to his wife. Did that stop cameron.jpg from asking again for it? Nope. That's when #001 was given to cameron.jpg's friend. angel.gif

Hi Brian!

Thanks for the report. I missed the FUN show but will be there the whole time @ Long Beach.

Greg: I actually did submit 5 world coins to NGC last month and just got them back yesterday. I was so pleased with the service and turnaround time I submitted another 6 already. NGC just received them yesterday.

I hope NGC does make a sample for the Long Beach show and NCS woiuld make one also. That would be neat!

I remember when cameron.jpg was whining about the low numbered sample slab. Wasn't cameron.jpg's frined going to torture cameron.jpg by putting it on e-bay with a high reserve, requiring pre approved bidders where cameron.jpg would be the only one? Too bad the plan fell through and a direct sale was made by cameron.jpg's friend to cameron.jpg. It really would have been funny to mess with cameron.jpg like that.

Did you join their Collectors Society or are you submitting thru the ANA?

If you do 20 World Value coins in a year, it's break-even to join their club since you get 10% if you use the online submission form and 5 free gradings.

Ok guys, enough of my pic. Post the whole pic with Traci next to me!

Cameron Kiefer

That's the only part I saw. I cropped it down a little to make it smaller sized, but Traci was never in the version that I saw.

ANA submission.

I'll have to have one of the nice NGC gals explain everything @ Long Beach. Maybe Dena will be there.

The best part was cropped out then. She was next to me and I had my arm around her cool.gif

Are you going to the SF ANA show? They will be there.

You know that when you join you get a state quarter multi-coin slab for free. Some insane guy purchased mine from me for something like $40. 27_laughing.gif

Hopefully she will give samples like she did at the 2004 FUN show.

She? So, you only want Sample Slabs from her. 893scratchchin-thumb.gif Pervert. 893naughty-thumb.gif

BTW, you never updated me on your Texas trip. Feel free to. Perhaps a PM would be better? 27_laughing.gif

That insane guy turned around and made a $10 profit on it.

That was a great post about Cameron. And it is so true about him. He is constantly BEGGING, PLEADING, GROVELING and WHINING about how he should get the 001 slab.

I have known Cameron since he was a wet behind the ears, green as grass, intern at the ANA Museum. (He did a great job there by the way!)

Sometimes his pleading has paid off and he ended up with some low number or unusual samples. (You have some of the British coin samples or Euros don't you Cameron?) (We are all scratching our heads as to exactly what the attraction is to a sample slab, when you could get one with a grade and a nicer coin in it.)

I will check to see if we are doing samples for the Long Beach show. I am pretty sure we will. I will have to set number one and perhaps number two aside for who ever begs the most. Just kidding.

We will probably have an exhibit at the table of the many different certification options and products including one Cameron may find interesting. The personalized slab label, on which we place your name, website, business name along with a state quarter sample. Dealers are using them as business cards.

Anyway, while on the subject of Long Beach, I hope we will see most of you at the show. It should prove to be a great show, especially with the the strength of the market and the fact that most dealers are getting a few weeks break from shows during the first half of Feb.

Definately not a show to miss. We will see you there.

Awesome Dena! I'll be there.

FYI Brian: those slabs made for dealers with the special blue label would be considered advertising slabs and not a sample slab.

I will be at the show Wed through Saturday so be sure to stop by the table and I will see what I can do. You need to stop by the table anyway and let me know what you be up to these days.

Anyway, I figure since everyone else is picking on you on the boards I would cut you a break and give you a slab.

Take it easy,

Brian
