Hi everyoneAll of the following 40-D nickels were selected for their strikes. Although the mintage is high for this date, from my experience, with some effort, a high grade 1940-D can be located with a full strike. 2 of the 3 coins pictured here have excellent strikes and they grade from MS64 to 66. Paid $25 each.

This next picture shows the typical strike problems of the 1940-D. Weak hair detail, the outline of Jefferson's head can be seen on the reverse.

Here's a 1941-D that I liked for the strike and color. It was graded by ANACS MS65 6 steps. Paid $50

Another 1941-D and I'm not too happy with it. The strike is less then a full strike and I didn't catch that when I bought it. $75! Sometimes this happens with me. Buy a coin, it's only after I get it home, I'll realize that I made a mistake in buyinga coin.

my favorite is the first one .. nice nickels

Before I bought these three, I paid $80 for another is a Pcgs holder. After getting back to the hotel, I didn't like the several carbon specks on the reverse. The seller was gracious to take it back the next day. The third coin pictured is the one I like the most, for it's strike, luster, eye appeal and also has 6 steps.

The next two coins have incredible strikes. The 1942-P, in spite of the carbon spot on the reverse and the fact the dealer warned me before hand that the coin may have been cleaned, I bought this coin solely for it's strike. All those streaks are from die polish lines. $20 Check out the wide rims and bold details!

I forgot to give details on the 1948-S pictured above. Best strike I've ever seen for this date. There is a scratch in the reverse upper left field but the fields are also full of die polish lines giving the coin a semi prooflike appearance. Very nice MS65. Paid $35.

Darn nice looking nickels. I think I agree with you that the third coin from the first post looks the nicest in that trio, though I like the toning on the first piece very much.

Believe it or not, acquiring this next coin was very gratufying! Although the steps are not full, the strike and condition of this coin is exceptional, to say the least!I bought this coin from Darryl Crane, founder and president of the newly established Full Step Nickel Club! It was a pleasure meeting and sharing coins with Darryl over the 3 days we were there. I hope you folks can appreciate and understand this coin for it's quality and steps! $50!

I wouldn't of bought that first 40-D coin if I didn't like it but I do make mistakes. The strike and color is very nice although I did question if the toning was AT. I'll try to get a better picture up soon.

The 63-D came from Darryl Crane. Although the coin would never FS at any TGS, the condition, luster and steps are very nice for this very tough date! $75.And the 69-S. I've never seen one with steps! The condition and quality probably grades MS62-63. $35

Nice bunch of nickels, Leo. Your 69-S is the best I've ever seen for steps.

Darrell recently fostered my acquisition of a very sweet 54-S that likely came from the same bunch as yours. He mentioned that he was taking those to FUN.

So, what's your membership number for the FSNC? I'm 263.

Hey King what did you use to take these pictures they are great!! Mike

Mike

I use a Sony Mavica FD91 coupled with macro lens. But even with a great camera, it takes a lot of practice and patience with setting the right light.

I'm sure you did and thanks for the correct spelling. Darrell talked about a number of 54-S's he recently came into and actually tried for a pop top grade with Pcgs.

I can't say I'm a member yet but my heart is there with the program! smile.gif We did talk about it and Darrell commented that I better hurry.....before it's too late! On that note we had a great laugh!

It would be a sad thing for the club to not make it. My (as editor) first edition of The Porticois nearly complete and I hope to have it out the door by early next week. Want me to send you one?

Join the club and contribute to the next issue. smile.gif

Hoot: What is the rundown on the FSNC and the Porticois? Have I been asleep at the switch again? I missed this one. I do not own many FS nickels, only a few war nickels, but I just purchased a NGC, 1945-D, MS67FS for a Registry year set.

Charlie, since Hoot didn't respond, I'll answer for him.

FSNC (Full Step Nickel Club) issues 6 pamphlets per year covering news, articles, letters/emails, ads, grading, step count, etc. directed at Jefferson collectors, FS or not.

Darrell, Dave and Mary Sue did a fantastic job with the club (along with contributors articles) and the word is spreading as THE place to go to learn anything and everything concerning Jeffersons. Unfortunately, Mary Sue had to leave but fortunately, Darrell found a new editor in Mark!

Membership is $30 first year (includes a one-time fee of $5 initiation) then $25 after that. Joining can be done online at varietynickels.com or you can email them at FSNC5555@aol.com. They may still have the Schlag SEGS Jeffs (MS and PR) for sale to new members. Not positive tho.

P.S. Mark, I'm 352! How many members does FSNC have now?

Thanks for the question Charlie and for the answer David! (I often have my computer on, the boards up on my browser, but I'm not around! (Like tonight!) Anyhow, I have just finished the final edit on the Jan/Feb newsletter. It'll go to the printer in the next day or two and once printed, off to Darrell for mailing.

The Portico has a new format and lots of new club information.

I'll be looking for contributions to the next issue!
