Registry set suggestions.....

4 posts in this topic

Just bouncing around some ideas that might improve the registry sets....

1) Adding a "US Classic Type Set?" This would include all coin types from 1793-1933, including gold. Some of us are really not into the modern designs yet I have to buy 4 Ikes and 5 Kennedys, for example, for the US Type Set as it exists today.

2) I would love to see a "My Registry Sets" home page where I can view a list of all my sets at once.

3) How about a set where one can register certified world coins? I understand that it would not be feasibe to score such a set - it would just be a "display only" set where one can register their dark side coins. Maybe specific country sets or continental sets can be created.

Anyone have any thoughts on these subjects?

Capital has a 19th Century Type set board that they sell with a similar theme. This particular set could also include Classic Head & Coronet gold, but not the early colonials that many can not afford anyhow. Even some of the 1800-1820 varieties are pretty expensive. However there already exits (3) gold Registry type sets that cover the gold era until 1933.

I would favor a 19th Century copper, bronze, nickel and silver type set from half-cents to Morgan Dollars

Rather than adding different new categories, it might help more people to do new weights for the 4 most popular series. All NGC would need to do is go to the Heritage files of past sales and take the average of last 4 prices in each NGC grade sold. Then just make the price equal to the weight for that grade. I think the set rankings would significantly change. This would certainly make the Morgan Sets more rational in the rankings and reward both the finest sets with pop tops as well as sets that are more complete but have currently underweighted circulated "collector" type examples. As it stands in the Morgans, there are VF semi-keys given 3 points, but very common MS-61's 150 points. And $30,000 coins in MS-64 are in cases outweighed by $4,000 MS-66 examples that are easily found. But that's the way it currently for Morgans. The marketplace is a very efficient weigher of rarity and completion value, and easy to convert to rank weights.

I am new to the registry having only started putting a few coins in about three weeks ago, but I was surprised this feature didn't already exist. When I hit the "My Home" tab I was expecting to see a list of my sets. That page seems pretty useless in its current form.
