Catalog I'm working on / need your opinion

13 posts in this topic

I'm cataloging a client's Standing Liberty quarter collection (which he will not be parting with any time soon). The focus of the collection is well-struck, original specimens, and included with the catalog will be a discussion of striking standards with regard to full-head detail. The client's collection has mostly NGC, some PCGS and a single ANACS coin. I want the coin descrptions to be short and concise.

Please look at the layout linked below and tell me whether you think it's a good format - basically two coins per page. The content isn't so important at the moment - just whether you think the layout yields good readability and a reasonably uncluttered look. Thanks!

Looks great James. I does look however as though some descriptions are continued on the next page. Maybe try to fit the coin and description on the same page.

When can you do my collection? wink.gif

Very nice layout James. Your work is excellent. My only concern would be that any single description does not fall short of what a coin deserves.

What is your criteria for a full shield? I see you have 98% full, 100% full. Does that mean all rivets are strong, all lines in the center shield are there?

The layout looks nice. I like it.

I agree with Charlie! thumbsup2.gif I think you've got a good balance of info per coin without embellishment, but as mentioned, I would try to keep the write-up to the same page. The readers eyes will be going from coin to reading to coin again. Don't want them to not be able to see it when done reading. JMHO

Merc, I'm sorry I can't give you a good explanation right now, as I'm still gathering images that will denote the percentage of full-shield strike. But that is much of the reason why I'm assembling this catalog - to facilitate the research.

To your point though, yes, a 100% full shield would require full rivet ("boss") detail, as well a fully detailed inner shield. It's interesting to note that even with great effort to find such coins for this set, there are only two that would fully qualify for the 100% designation!

Hayden, yes you are correct. The client does actually own some of the coins that are greyed out, but feels their striking deficiency is not appropriate for the catalog, and won't be added until upgraded. Incidentally, I did pick up an upgrade coin just recently.

I've reduced the font of the text from 12 point to 10 point, which will prevent the text from flowing to the next page. When I get a chance, I'll post the slightly new "look".

Thanks all!

James
