Lawsuits, verbal fisticuffs, insults...how come we don't have any?

38 posts in this topic

As a member of the PCGS forums, I read what I think to be of interest or informative to me as there really are a lot of people there that are extremely knowledgeable, when they wish to impart it. But for the most part, one must wade thru the BS to get it.

And from time to time, I (and others here) have found it necessary to defend NGC forums and members. Such is the case tonight. You can either read the entire thread here or just where I posted and the responses here. Either way, you'll quickly see the original thread went down the tubes and gave way to innuendo, name-calling, ego blustering, etc. SOP for them most of the time. Tis truly sad.

David, you said it perfect. After wading through the 9 page thread, I realized that the same fight is going on that was going on when I joined that forum. I really enjoy reading the threads here and across the street but I don't feel comfortable posting there much because I am so new and have no knowledge about coins that I don't want to ask the wrong question or get laughed at. Sometimes a simple question can start a major fight. However, I still feel blessed to have both places to go and read and learn. hail.gifgrin.gif

The simple and most obvious answer is that there are several hundred more posters at CU and the board has been up longer. If you will notice that some of the most vocal critics of the board here and now submitting coins through NGC. Whenever you have that many posters there is bound to be conflict and quite frankly there are a few there that seem to encourage conflict, its human nature. When I first joined there I had a reputation for having an anti-PCGS chip on my shoulder. What I saw as intellectual discussions others saw as blasphemy.

The same attitude exists here to a smaller extent in that some posters here that taking a balanced look at both companies is akin to blasphemy. Quite frankly I don't post much here any more because of some of the comments along that line. Neither board is perfect, both companies have good things to offer and as any business make decisions that we as collectors often question. One thing you should learn as you get older is that it is ok to question your own beliefs and to learn from others. In the end smart folks are who they from what they learned from others, both the good and the bad. Neither board is as bad or as good as some folks like us to believe. sign-rantpost.gif

Although I was banned from PCGS, I do have an option to rejoin under a new ID. I've chosen not to do so, and instead, to stick with the NGC forum. Why? Because I prefer the lower post volume. Whenever I go to the PCGS forum, which is rare, it just seems like 80% of the posts are bashes, irrelevant comments, or just redundant posts. Not that there isn't much good information over there, but I very much prefer the brevity and conciseness of the NGC forum.

Besides, I haven't gotten banned!

Mel,

IrishMike is correct that the online community across the street is much bigger. Consequently, that makes for a much bigger chance of noise. Also, proportionately, there may be the same amount of noise here as across the street. Dunno. Never measured...

Bottom line - I think you should not allow a virtual, online, community to intimidate you. If you present yourself reasonably and with clarity, then you really have very little to fear from the noise.

If the winner of lawsuits is measured by who ends up with all the money then the principle of the matter is lost! I have found it most interesting that so many posters over there have admitted that this is so. Those who are consistently selling pop top coins for rediculous money, aren’t they the real winners with the registries?

Here’s another thought! Who fosters the idea that one grading service is better than another? I believe there is a deeper agenda waiting to unfold with these lawsuits! Perhaps this is the reason for the departure of many prominent numismatists? This just may be the straw that breaks the camel’s back!

And lastly, what is all this excitement about that causes so many there to be innocent bystanders while they’re eating popcorn? 27_laughing.gif

That isn't it at all. You have moderators here who rule with an iron fist. Plain and simple. Over at PCGS, you have moderators who have alt-id accounts and stir up [#@$%!!!], and they allow other forum members to have 3 or 4 or more alt-ids to stir up [#@$%!!!]. Bad management, plain and simple.

Michael,

I'm surprised to see this from you. You always seemed to be of good nature over on PCGS and seemed to be held in high regard. I've always enjoyed reading your input on coins.

Neverthless, I'm glad to see you over here. grin.gif

michael, my friend while I don't read many of the posts at CU I have only seen one member take exception to anything you have contributed over there. There are many very decent and intellingent folks over there that understand his motivation for doing so and find it repugnant. Usually when I read one of his posts I want to puke up. I know he has a "click" over there but so what. hi.gif

Just as eBay allows for a Seller to be blocked by the viewer, I mildly wish Coin Universe would allow a feature that would block selected posters at the choosing of the reader. Of course, with that said, the forums would then be about 50% empty!

Gee, what a waste of time! Christo_pull_hair.gif No wonder I never cruise across the street if this is typical of the threads. I'm not trying to be a smart- but what a waste of time. Was anything said that was constructive what-so-ever?

I read most everything here and probably spend too much time across the street reading.

I have to agree that some of the threads are a waste of time. I use the back button quite a bit.

This forum is just as fun for me as CU and the new Toned coin one. They are what they are.

Why limit yourself because of some of the threads you don't wish to read? Some threads are just wrong, some are folks having fun and others are of great value because of the knowledge that can be gained.

At my local library I pass the fiction but it won't keep me from the rest of what interest me.

Across the street has lost many members because of some of what goes on there. At the same time I feel we have lost some great members here due to the bashing of CU.

I encourage everyone to use all the forums and just read what is good for you. Sure you will have to wade thru lots of cra$ but there is lots of great information out there if you have the time to do so.

Please forgive me for my rant. smile.gif

Your input is welcome and it certainly isn't a rant.

I was talking noise and largely out of ignorance since I've never read too much at PCGS. It is just that the threads that I have read which were linked at this forum were boring and a waste of my time. I'm sure that there are threads with substance but I just haven't read them.

Which members have we lost here due to CU bashing? I'd seriously like to know.

Over there they talk like all we do is bash them. They think too highly of themselves. In reality the number of bashes here compared to the number of times they whine about bashes is probably 100-1 if not more.

Greg:

Given that I post more frequently on the PCGS board, I must be a PCGS poster so I can tell you that I feel that your comment "They think too highly of themselves" just bashed me!

Guilty as charged! I have bashed them couple times in the past three years, always in response to statements (over there) that trashed NGC slabs as unworthy of PCGS acceptance. I knew at the time that I was whistling in the wind and should have passed the temptation by.

Now, I just do not go over there much and let my PCGS membership lapse. Problem solved!

I don't blame you at all.

Folks with that attitude are just a bit out of touch

and in a minority.IMHO.

The point of my post was not to create a debate.

It was to encourage folks to enjoy the knowledge that all the forums have to offer. It's hard for me sometimes but I try not to let the opinions of a few to effect my direction and ability to gain knowledge in the hobby. smile.gif
