Coin Inheritance - Newbie Question

7 posts in this topic

I recently inherited some old coins with the death of my parents. Most that I can find online seem rather normal…early 1900s, a few late 1800s - Morgan Dollars, Peace Dollars, Walking Liberty Half Dollars, Silver Roosevelt Dimes, etc. There must be hundreds of them in all.

How do I take these to someone to estimate their value and trust them not to steal the one rare coin in the whole bunch? I have been too trusting in the past and it has gotten me into trouble, I don’t wish to make that mistake again…but I do want to know the value of these coins.

Any suggestions?

Buy yourself a couple of price guides and go through each coin so you have at least some idea of what they are worth. Keep in mind, if you want to sell them as a group, they won't bring what the price guide says, and price guides can only give you a general idea of a coins value. If you do want to sell them, pick up an issue of Coin World. You'll find dozens of advertisements of dealers wanting to buy complete collections. Then, come back here to the coin forum and ask about the reputation of the dealers who might of caught your attention.

Thanks whoopig, this I have done. There were only 2. If this is worth something of value, I need to sell it so I can take care of a minor

emergency. I'm a fish out of water here and don't want to get ripped off. Thanks for the help.

PS - neat name, I grew up in Fayetteville in the 70's & 80's and have said that (too) many times.

You could also buy a Redbook and try looking up all the date and mintmark combinations to find the rarities, such as the 1878-CC dollar you posted.
