Any Civil War token collectors in these parts?

13 posts in this topic

I've been an avid collector for about six months now and am getting into it even more now. I hope theres some others in here who are doing the same. I myself am trying to assemble a collection of all the R-1's. I've got 86 left. I also purchase tokens I think look great. smile.gif

I still have a couple of dozen civil war tokens that I've had since I was ten years old 29 years ago that I got for next to nothing since they were all holed, filled or bent. They may not be worth much but I still find their history fascinating.

Best of luck to you in obtaining the remaining 86. Whew! That seems like it may take a little work. 893whatthe.gif

Well im trying to obtain them in XF-40ish condition. I like the circulated detailed look to them. It really shows they're age and they're detail. They only average about $12 a piece with a few (the monitors) going for around $50. I figure it'll take awhile but it's worth it and fun. Oh so you know R-1's are the most common. smile.gif

The most popular are probably Monitor tokens. ( I am guessing)

I think that the most of the rare ones are undervalued. You can own a coin with a total known population of 2-4 TOTAL for a few hundred bucks on up.

The "Hunting Dogs" are probably the equivalent of the CWT 1804 Dollars!

1. The most popular are probably either the monitors, Lincolns, or the pro-south tokens. Lincoln over Davis.

2. The "sleeper undervalued" pieces in my opinion are anything at the R-9 level, obviously you'r not going to get any R-10's cause they're unique but R-9 go for only a thousand or less, thats quite a deal considering there are only 2-4 known to exist. Another sleeper in my opinion are any of the R-3's and R-4's, they're usually lumped in with all the rest of the low rarities like R-1's and when or if these tokens become popular these will make you great money. A great addition to this list would be "Indiana Primitive" store cards. These tokens that are usually R-7 are far rarer than that, I believe most to be an R-8 if not an R-9. Most people never get one of these. My final sleeper pick would be the "beehive industry" this token is rated at an R-3 and can be had for about $30 in XF-40. It's a heck of a lot rarer than the rarity suggests.

3. There are a few actually. The first like 20 obverse dies resemble something of a bust, while one die, I believe is an R-9, is just like the bust half.

EDITED TO ADD, I thought you meant resembling that coin. I now think you mean value wise. Like Goose3 said, probably the Hunting Dogs. One of thee most beautiful cwt's created. The unknown die sinker has also made some other beautiful dies which were delisted from the series beacuse they were made a few years after the war ended. It sold last year for about $20,000 at private sale. That was the most paid for a cwt, imagine the possibilities for this series.

I FINALLY got around to joining the CWTS just a few weeks ago. They didn't send me any back issues....only the 2 books that I ordered when I joined.

That's what I was thinking Michael. It would be a great idea. Q. David Bowers mentioned me in his column last month. smile.gif I guess he was impressed with my stuff.

Good job Goose, read them books. You'll be getting your first issue probably in a few weeks. smile.gif
