Why Wouldn't U Bust This Key Date Morgan Out?

Because if NTC calls it light cleaning, it is probably scrubbed with SOS. Also, that light cleaning might really be something more - like whizzing.

Rule number one: If an otherwise expensive coin is either raw or in a slab like that one, there's a reason for it.

Rule number two: The usual way you're going to rip a coin is if you spot a mint-error or otherwise scarce variety the seller isn't aware of.

Rule number three: No one who is not a family member (or family member wannabee) is going to sell you a problem-free coin at a deep discount.

I just drove over to Bishop, CA last monday and checked out the local coin shop. The proprietor just got back a submission from NGC. It was an 1891 CC "spitting eagle" variety Morgan dollar graded ms 63. What a gift! The only thing that this coin had going for it was great luster but the devices and fields were severely bag marked. It would be lucky to make a 62.

So why the leniency from one of the big two? Does the variety and the mint mark justify a bump of 1 to 2 points in the grade? Call me obtuse but I just don't get it.

You answered your own question - great luster. A coin is penalized more for post-bag mishandling than for bagmarks. Diminished luster, hairlines, etc are what kill Morgans in the grading department.

TDN, thanks for the info. Now, I have more insight but no more of an understanding of the practice.

Victor: Going all the way to the big city from Tonapah, NV to Bishop, CA eh? I can see why they bumped the coin. It is a scarce variety.

Yep, Charlie, it's the redneck way of life. Hoot can fill you in. 27_laughing.gif

p.s. I thought that the spitting eagle was pretty cool looking, too.

I used to go deer hunting in Bridgeport, CA when I lived in L.A. Also, I did some work on a Cinnebar mine north of Tonapah years ago. So I know the area but Tonapah is probably bigger now than in 1964.
