The PCGS grade on this 1901-S quarter has gotta be a gift!

I'd call that FA02.

PCGS seems to put just about ANY of these that are NOT Full G4's into AG3 holders no matter what they look like.

I've actually been kinda looking for a nice solid AG3 one of these certified by ANACS/NGC/Or PCGS and the variance in AG3 is huge in PCGS slabs from what I've seen.

Nothing like grade-flation (or is that grade-flatulation?) to rip the common, working man!

I was reading Coin World an issue or two back where I saw a PCGS F-12 1916 D Mercury dime. A couple of pages later, there was a common date Merc also graded F-12 by PCGS. The common date was accurately graded but the key date was inflated from a mediocre VG to a F-12. That's a thousand dollars extra someone is making for pure, 100% B.S.!!! I don't care what the market accepts, period! I'd prefer not to have one than to play their silly reindeer games.

Furthermore, I think that whizzing is more ethical than grade-flation because at least a whizzed coin is not pretentious.

My all-time favorite TPG AG3 also happened to reside in a PCGS holder, though I am not trying to single out PCGS about this practice.

This was a 1796 quarter in a PCGS AG3 green holder that not only had details on the low end of FA2, but also had several prominent scratches on the obverse and was clearly slightly bent. foreheadslap.gif

Tom, I know exactly which coin you're talking about, because I got to review it in-hand. ANACS would definitely have net-graded it as PO-1, but really, I thought the coin was a cull. It was the WORST "AG" '96 that I've ever seen.

But to emphasize what someone else said, all of the certification companies make that kind of mistake. I was particularly interested in the 1901-S I linked because about a year ago, I sold one that was consigned to me in an ANACS AG-3 slab. It was exactly like this PCGS coin - an AG obverse, but a PO minus minus reverse. I approached ANACS for a verbal, and they flippantly told me the grade was "OK".
