red.red brown, brown designation on copper cents

18 posts in this topic

Howdy and welcome to the boards.

This will likely sound stupid, but there really are no set standards to encompass all of what is RD, RB or BN. Coins can be toned somewhat, even colorfully, and still receive the RD designation. Other coins might receive the RB designation in one grading and then come back as RD in a subsequent grading. The grading services have even admitted this when, at one time, they posted that "liner" copper coins, those that are high end for a grade assignment and are borderline in color assignment, will have have the color bumped and the grade limited or the opposite.

One should always base the value of a copper coin on its appearance, not on its designation.

Very pretty cent. Likely RB due to the darkness of the rims and the adjacent effect on the fields.

A little OT: Personally, the only centls I like in full red are Lincoln circulation strikes, but a pretty RB or full chocolate brown with superb greens, blues, purples, and pinks will take the cake with me every time.

Again, I think your coin looks superb.

Your coins looks "red" to me but I wouldn't count on any consistancy with the TPG's. The statement "your GUESS is as good as mine" pops into my head when people start talking about the red/red-brown standards for copper.

Welcome to the board pawnee101!

That’s a nice looking coin, I like it. I would call it a RB. The color designations for copper don’t mean much to me, because I’ve seen coins given a RB or BN designation that I would rather own over a coin with a RD designation. I judge copper on a coin to coin basis. Here are a couple of Lincoln’s from my set that would probably get the RB designation from the grading companies, but that I would rather have than a full red coin.

I posted two obverse photos of the 1919 taken at slightly different angles to show the ring of tone around the rim.

Well thanks guys you kinda cleared that up for me, I like the 27-d coin but if its a RB would make a lot of dif on the price, I was thinking on buying the coin , its not mine, I think I will try to get him down on the price to a RB 65, I think he thinks its a 66 red

Hey Wihlborg,

that's a great looking 19 you got there!

I really like the red brown Lincolns, I have recently posted my registry set and it's got a lot of RB's, even some BN's, and yes it has pics.

Hey TomB, I remember seeing your 1912 proof at Parsippany maybe a year ago or so. Now that is a great looking matte proof! I wish I could've bought it, all I could afford at the time was a nicely toned Sacagawea, NGC MS65. Still got it too, nicest 'Sac' I've seen yet!

Here is a '26-D. MS65BN that has steel blue toning that I really like. The image is a scan and is not great, but the coin has great eye appeal.
