1877 IHC, I think NGC missed the color designation on this one!

There does seem to be quite a bit of red showing through. I`m not sure what percentage qualifies for the RB designation from NGC. But for a brown designation it`s definitly a premium quality coin.

While there does appear to be quite a bit of red, most of it is around the edge of the coin - basically the last part of the coin a person is going to see. Overall there is maybe 15%-25% of red on each side of the coin. Is that enough to get a RB designation? confused-smiley-013.gif As a buyer, I'd personally want more red than that. I'd like at least twice that much red.

Still it is a PQ coin for the color designation.

While not being an expert in this series I have submitted many IHCs to NGC in the past year. The designation is consistant to what I have received. Even a red coin that is slightly subdued will get a red/brown designation. There must be quite a good amount of red remaining to get r/b.

As Greg says, there should be at least twice as much red to get the red/brown assignment. Personally if I would like this coin better if it were an even chocolate brown rather than splotchy red.

I recently picked up a RB two cent piece in a new NGC slab from a dealer on the CU boards. To me the coin looks red, though slightly subdued as you say. I've seen Linclons in PCGS Red holders that were more subdued than this coin. Needless to say, I was quite pleased with the coin since I didn't pay a premium over a RB price. I did wonder though if the coin had made a trip to NCS but the seller said it looked like many others he had seen. It's the most red two cent piece I have, so I'm not a good judge.

That Indian looks like a typical low end RB copper to me. It's much more red than a RB half cent and RB two cent that I have in ANACS holders. ANACS seems way too liberal with the RB designation and I'll be watching out for them when purchasing from images only as I did these two.
