Auction is over, what do you think about the toning on this BTW

I have not seen this exact combination of colors on a 1950-S BTW before. Do you think it is natural?

The thing that gets me on this coin.. is why the toning is nice around the edges... Ker T. Was(That area) and the luster looks good(Same Area) but then on the cheek the coin looks like so much less.... I will say it is NT.. but I would not be supprised if it was AT..

It is in an SEGS slab, which leads me to suspect that maybe somebody else gave it a bodybag. Most of the really pricy 50-S BTW's I have seen have variations on the blue/purple toning theme, not too different from what shows up on this coin. The somewhat "crackled" toning also seems pretty typical for BTWs. THe yellow is the unusual part, at least in my limited experience.

I watched the single $450. bid placed on that one at the beginning of the auction run and watched it closed with that one single bid.

Personally, I believe it to be AT as that crackly kind of color is often faked on early Commemoratives and a run of these hit SEGS a couple plus years back and trickle into the market at a rate that doesn't raise too much suspicion.

The toning is 100% AT. There were a bunch of these made. I purchased one off eBay raw for a fraction of the price of this coin several years ago. The toning was better with more color, but clearly AT. I got mine from a dealer in FL that seemed to have a supply of similar looking coins. 893scratchchin-thumb.gif Mine went into a SEGS slab also with an MS66 grade. It ended up selling to a high profile toning dealer (who was fully aware it was AT) for their personal collection.

You can actually find some of these AT coins in first tier slabs. Some slipped thru early on, but were quickly stopped. I saw a BTW like this in an NGC slab break the 2K barrier maybe 2 years ago. A few in PCGS slabs surfaced shortly after that with 5K-8K price tags. They quickly dropped off the market and haven't been seen since, so I assume either PCGS bought them off the market or they are in a collection somewhere.

this particiular color of purple is a dead no brainer giveaway on this AT coin especially so on the outside edges

this specific purple color is always AT and even if one out of 1000 coins is not it is still highly suspect and a pass coin for me

unless for some devil.gif coin sellers

it is cheap to buy and they get it in a first tier slab and then put it up on ebay and sell it for big $$$ such is the coin game capitalism in its rawest form

might be legal but it is still wrong with no integrity morals and no responsibility and low class

but

for me life is only about one thing choices i hope you make all the right ones

look at all the peacock ikes and appliliation hoard silver jeff nicks boo.gifdevil.gifflamed.gif

Greg certainly has the answer. It looked AT to me, but pretty. If I had bought it, I'd just leave it in the SEGS slab and enjoy it. I think that the coin is pretty, if not odd. If the toning remains stable over time, then it'll maintain some modicum of value. It'll be interesting to see!

I think the toning is fake, but oddly, I also think it's somewhat attractive. I'd buy the coin if it were affordable enough.

That's not odd at all. There are many coins that are AT and attractive. Just look at all the ones PCGS and NGC have slabbed. Hell, I probably own a few. 27_laughing.gif

I think this particular coin might have real toning but the periferal violet color was added later. The "cracked" look I've seen on many coins considered NT.. 893scratchchin-thumb.gif

OK. I guess it is time to fess up. I am the one that bought the coin. I did so with full understanding that the major services might consider this AT, and that in fact it may be AT. However, it is head and shoulders above the average butt-ugly 1950-S BTW out there and a few thousand dollars less than the other (possibly artificially toned) beauties out there.

If I have to keep it in an SEGS slab I can live with that since my collection has to please noone except me. Thanks for your input. If you find a better real one outside of an auction I will pay you a finders fee.

The way I figure it if you LIKE the coin then by all means....who the hell cares if it is AT? If you are happy with it (including the PRICE) then you should get it. After all, it is YOUR money, no?

I just think people make too much of a big deal about the AT/NT thing. It's way overblown, IMO.

Chippewa, return the coin ASAP. You've got too fine a collection to taint it with this coin. I believe that when you see this coin in person, you will find that it screams AT.

BTW, I looked up my coin. I purchased it in July 2001 and paid $66. Today, I'm sure some of the eBay tone dealers could make you one for half that price.

Just got it back from NGC. Bagged for AT to the surprise of no posters here (and with the back panel missing from my SEGS slab.) mad.gif The consolation is that my ANACS MS63 Norse Thin crossed to a NGC MS64. I am no grading wizard but I cannot even find one mark on that coin (medal) under 10 power. It must be that they think the strike is not great or they just grade so few of these that 64 seems like a safe grade.

Chippewa, don't be to down on yourself! Like a Jom said, if you think it's a great coin, then that's what matters!

Personally, I wouldn't mind owning a coin that looks that nice. It's just a question of where your price tolerance lies.

James, I am not upset or aggravated and certainly not down on myself. In fact, on life's scale of adversity, this does not even register a 1.0 out of 10.0. I was hopeful that maybe it would cross but knew there was a good chance for the bag.

I think the NGC graders must have read this thread and posted a "wanted" sign on the grading room wall for when this dude showed up!!
