Welcome to the forum.

There are many counterfeit coins of that type. Hopefully you bought yours from a reputable seller.

my first thought not a genuine philly mint item

i am in agreement with mark feld

sorry..................................................

my opinion----- the date logotype as compared to the dentils is TOTALLY incorrect for this coin and the dentils are totally OFF for this coin

Thanks Larry for help with the pics. And thanks to all for looking at this.

The pictures make the obverse look dull and reverse looks like it is shiny.

If this really is a fake, then I will be devastated. But all I can with it is to

comparison with other pics/example. With the link to the pcgs coin, they

look identical. Same with the Red Book pics. Not one difference through

entire coin. This coin does have a problem with the reverse. There are strange

'marks' going across the reverse. Hard to say what it is, kind of looks like a

shadow.

You might want to check the weight and size before sending it in. It should weigh 26.73 grams and be 38.1mm. Most fakes look like the real thing to most people. The weight in wrong on many fakes but not always. I wish you luck but I don't feel you will be happy if you do send it in.

In particular, the obverse detail on the figure of Ms. Liberty looks too weak/mushy for a coin with little or no obvious wear.

If you don't mind sharing, what were the circumstances of the transaction? I have a strong suspicion that the answer will be telling.

Unfortunately, not a genuine US Mint product.

Wow!

Welcome to the forum Liberty King.

I would think maybe some better pictures and details in the purchase, as Mark suggested, might be in order before one is so conclusive. I mean, are you really that skilled to be 100% certain from these extremely poor pictures?

You may very well be, and that may very well be a counterfeit, but seems to be a rush to judgement and probably crushing to the OP. How about waiting to be 100% convinced until better pics and other specifics are posted.

Counterfeit.

Could have been made in a couple of places whose names begin with "C." However, one of the "C" places makes better counterfeits than this 1854 thing.

Guess I will confirm everybody's posts, this i a fake coin. It didn't weigh, it was a gram under. I am very mad at myself for being overconfident on this, but it sure did look

right, in every respect. Had no idea that there were fakes of this coin out there. Granted, I am no expert, but i'm not a novice either, 15+ yrs collecting.

Thank you all for your help.

Well in this case yes. The date font is just wrong, the 8 especially, too thin and misshapen, The upward sloping crossbar on the 4 is wrong as well,

I don't believe anyone wants to "crush" the OP in any manner. The piece is what it is - a fake. I hope the OP can get his money back and will not give up on the hobby because he stumbled across one crook.

I think I see what you are speaking of now.

I guess you guys are just that good. ;)

I was hoping for the OP that y'all might have been wrong. :P

Besides the specific diagnostics of the date cut, the piece is a telltale counterfeit on the obverse especially, with a softness of central detail and softness of denticles that screams "bad." I do hope the op can get his $ back.
