1898 Canadian 5-cent

6 posts in this topic

Going thru a box of coins from my Mom's estate, I found a small sealed plastic bag with a single tiny (smaller than a US dime) Canadian 5-cent piece dated 1898. The "head" on the coin is Queen Victoria. The coin itself looks uncirculated (bright silver color) and all of the coin detail on both sides appears to be like new. Is there a market in the US for Canadian coins of this type? Does it have any value?

Thanks for any help here.

Yes, there is a large market for Canadian coins in the US.

I don't have a Krause (world coin reference book) with me right now, but 1898 is a better date and I would guess would be worth around $80 in uncirculated. However, these are coins that can look uncirculated, but easily have some run in the hair, knocking them down to AU ($40).

Wow! Is this coin something I should maybe have formally appraised/graded? If so, where should it be taken? I live in the Seattle area.

If you can post a picture preliminary opinions can be rendered right here.

Yes, have it graded and slabbed if you intend to sell it. NGC, PCGS and ANACS all authenticate and grade Canadian coins. There is a Canadian 3rd party grader too, but I have no experience with them or their product.

If you just want to keep it an AIR-TITE holder will protect the coin.
