Medallion from Austria-Hungary 1895

15 posts in this topic

I have inhereted a gold medallion which was made in Wienna in the old Austria-Hungary empire in 1895. It is made of pure either 24 or 18 Karat Gold. The medallion has a diameter of approximately 4 cm. On the back it has a picture of the Austria-Hungarian emperor Franc Ios, while on the front there is a picture of like two eagles. The medallion is in perfect condition.

I was wondering if anyone can tell me approximately how much this medallion is worth? Thanks in advance.

Here are pictures of the medallion. Not the best quality, but still.

On the first picture it says:

"HVNGAR * BOHEM * GAL * ( 4 ) LOD * ILL * REX A * A * 1895"

On the second picture it says:

"FRANC * IOS * D * G * AVSTRIAE IMPERATOR"

I found this piece of information:

1915 Austrian Gold Ducat

1915 Austria

.986 Gold

Ducats were issued by Austria in 1612, and probably earlier. The last regular issue of ducats was in 1914. All the ducats dated 1915 are restrikes, of which there were 996,721 struck between 1920 and 1936. One ducat coins dated 1915 are still being produced by the Austrian Mint as official restrikes. Ducats are produced in high purity gold, 233/4 carats, making them among the highest purity gold coins ever issued for circulation and because they have inherited their design and appearance from medieval gold coins, they are very thin compared with modern coins, at just 0.8 mms. thick.

I was also wondering if anyone knows the purpose of this Medallion, or whatever it is. Were they used in commerce?

Howdy intenzo - what you have there is a coin known as a gold ducat. They were issued primarily as trade coins. And while ducats of previous years were used in commerce - meaning they did circulate - their primary use was for international trade.

I've been trying to find an example with the same date as yours, but I haven't been able to. Just guessing, and I could be off some, but compared to other examples of different dates, I would say its worth $100.00 give or take some. Keep checking back though, I'm sure someone might be able to help you.

You have a gold Austrian 4 ducat, 1895. Used as gold trade coinage. .986 fine(23.7Karat), .4438 troy oz of gold. KM#2276 with a XF catalog value of $550, however, these are bullion coins that sell for gold bullion value(approx. $200US)

"FRANC * IOS * D * G * AVSTRIAE IMPERATOR" translates:

Franz Joseph 1, by the greater glory of God, Emperor of Austria

Yup, good info above. I just sold one dated 1915, which are the restrikes, for $200. That is just a couple dollars over bullion value. Yours looks holed though. I guess that doesn't subtract much from the bullion value. I liked that this coin is very pure gold and looks like a proof coin.
