FB Roosevelt Dimes! Is that correct?

14 posts in this topic

Hi everyoneRecently I came across some good reading that there was once a group of collectors that called themselves, "The Full Straps Roosevelt Dime Club". This club was formed by collecter Steven Ritter out of Maryland back in 1981. It was further noted that there were some 150 members in that club. Obviously, these folks could lay claim of fostering the FB Roosevelt dime craze. 893scratchchin-thumb.gif But they referred to their dimes as having full straps instead of full bands. I did a little research on what torches were traditionally made of and a burnable strap was used to hold the torch together. So perhaps FS instead of FB would be a more appropriate designation. 893whatthe.gifOn further note after doing some transposing with the Roosevelt dime, I'm a bit confused with what the craze on FB Roosevelts is all about. Since I’m into transposing the two sides of a coin into one, I did one for the Roosevelt dime. I don’t know the criterias that make a FB dime but from the transposed picture, only one strap lies opposite of a high point from the obverse! The other lower strap seems to lie in the shallow area of the temple of Franklin’s Head.

In the second picture I’ve circled some areas that appear to be high points of the obverse. And I tried to draw circles in those areas on the reverse side that may lie opposite of those high points on the obverse.

So perhaps all this hype over FS or FB, whatever they might be called, Roosy dimes need to be re-examined for clarity! 27_laughing.gif This probably only matters to those so called specialists collectors these TGCs keep creating due to their inability to grade fully struck modern coins! laugh.gifLeo

The lower bands (strap) are the notorious area of weakness, and there are striking problems in this area on all dates of Roosevelt Dimes, even the most recent issues come weakly struck quite often. Many dates are rare or unknown in MS66+ and FB!

Join the club. I'm confused about the craze of Full "strap" Franklins, Standers and Mercs also. To each his/her own I suppose...

It separates the registry set players from everyone else. It's good for people who want a nice example of a coin without caring about the strike on 2% of that coin.

Players?! 27_laughing.gif

Yes, it is VERY good because it depresses the price of non-whatever coins. Putting a nice SLQ set together, for example, would cost FAR more otherwise. It is amazing how cheap that set is (relatively speaking) compared to others...

It's odd that I don't remember thr FSRDC. I must have heard of them so probably they were just interested in the silver dimes so I simply forgot. I got out of collecting the silver dimes in 1979/80.

Some of the clads are extremely rare with FT. Even nice strikes can be tough on several dates.

I simply thought it was funny that you're on a first-name basis with the former president! laugh.gif

I think I got tired of typing out Roosevelt!

By the way, my grandmother, on my dad's side of the family, was a 9th generation descendent of Mary Ball, the mother of George Washington. George Washington never really had children of his own as he adopted! So he's something like a 11th generation uncle to me!

Interestingly enough, as I grew up in my area, many people would salute me and for the longest time I never knew why although, at times, I thought they were just being cute or smart. But one day, I finally started asking some of those folks why they had saluted me and they would ask me, "Aren't you related to the Colonal Stroup that lived around here for many years? So now that I know and I'm not related to this Colonal, as I'll tell them, adding that, I AM a distant relative of of that great General who led the Revolutionary war! They usually yawn and could care less, now that I'm not related to Colonal Stroup! 27_laughing.gif And they probably don't know who led the Revolutionary war anyway! 27_laughing.gif

I'm familiar with the club and spoke at length with one of its members about four years ago. I believe some of the details of that conversation I posted over on the old PCGS boards, but those boards appear to be gone now.

The designations mean little, especially since the remainder of the coin could look like it was struck in oatmeal.
