envelope toned proof two cent piece

22 posts in this topic

since envelopes didnot come into vogue until circa the 1880's this was most probably in mint tissue and then put into an envelope before the turn of the 20th century

i have seen some copper like this in regards to half cents and two cent pieces in proof

it is really uncommon to find such vibrant color and really super deep mirrors combined with a superb gem technical grade

thanks shane and hoot! thumbsup2.gif and mikeking!! thumbsup2.gif

i have specialized in blue colored copper for years and this coin is totally original

it is amazing in person and rare but with two cent pieces and three cent nicks in proof no one knows or cares

if this coin with its superb technical qualities and low pop where in a more popular date collected series it would be worth 100 times as much flamed.gif

and has no hairlines or marks at all sat untouched somewhere wrapped up for over 100 years

the 1864 and 65 proof two centers always have ugly brown walnut colored subdued mirrors

THIS COIN SHOULD NOT EXIST devil.gif

but it does the problem is it is not a popular coin no one cares about it and does not want to collect it you cant go out even after years of searching and find a coin like this so no supply so you cant have demand with no supply and no one knows about it or sees coins like this as you cant find them also if you go out and look for nice colored or deeply mirrored two cent pieces in proof you will find 99% of the time ugly mostly brown toned walnut toned coins with subdued dark mirrors and just little unattractice eye appeal

this is the key with most all two cent pieces in proof they are butt ugly fugly frustrated.gif

so add it all up and the proof two cents along with their proof three cent nick cousins have never been in demand wanted coinage screwy.gif

i love them when they look like this the ultimate in looks and magnitude of rariety even if you want one good looking coin for a type set in proof you will go looking long and hard for years to find sometyhing like this coin and i guarantee you in person sight seen it is 100 times better than the photo i guess they are out there to buy but man it will take you years

as you can see from the photo it is strongly cameoed but would not get the cameo on the holder as it is deeply toned but it is cameoed nonetheless and the mirrors are so deep and the color so vibrant you do not need to tilt the coin in a light it is a killer in any light and at any angle

now these coins where not popular and are still not so it sat in mint tissue and finally put into an envelope by the 1880s 1890;s and left there stored somewhere

in the back of a dealers safe??

and mike king i will let you know if the coin ever comes available

thnaks guys thumbsup2.gif these boards definately have more true advanced collectors than the other boards and it is more kinder and LESS MEAN HERE too

yay.gifyay.gifyay.gifthese boards may not be the biggest but they are certianly the best yay.gifyay.gifyay.gif

OH AND THIS BLUE COLOR IS REALLY UNCOMMON YOU DO SEE IT ON MORE PROOF INDIAN CENTS BUT OF course there are many more proof indian cents but the blue color is rare if it is even on both sides!

now i have seen some really cool late date braided hair proof half cents of specifically 1856 and 1857 that have lots of blue in them raw and graded in brown and rb holders and these coins are also original and all have the same coloration and the specific shade of blue color and texture and skin of this coin too....... again from envelopes

it is really rare to find totally blue on both sides this is why the indian cents in proof as of recently that have this blue color evenly on both sides bring multiples 5x to 8x of sheet at auction

now of course the two cent pieces in proof and especailly so the proof half cents are rare with these type of colors and no brown in them but since there are so few and fewer with the blue colors that many have not seen or do not even know exist and combined with the limited demand for such coins there is little to no demand for them

and is truly a super specialized field which takes years to learn the nuances of

if it was up to me it would be a law that if you start a proof 19 century type set you need a proof half cent and proof two cent piece 893whatthe.gifdevil.gif but i could make exceptions for the proof half cents if collectors run out of coins to buy

Old proof copper is fantastic and unparalleled for color. Your 2 center shows that perfectly, but TomB has also shown some GREAT Indian head cents that have amazing color! I saw a couple of his coins in Baltimore a couple of years ago and was blown away. More and more, I find myself turning that direction. blush.gif

The conditions that your 2 cent piece must have been kept under must have been PERFECT to develop that kind of color. One in a million, and there aren't even that many left! laugh.gif

hoot a good observation as you can see the coin got lucky with no spots or haze or subdued mirrors when put away and and just left alone so no handling cleaning etc. hence no hairlines, nicks or scratches

as the coin was not in demand and unpopular and someone got it cheap a hundred fifty or so years ago and just put it away

why not? too good to throw away or spend

but not good enough for a collector of years past to collect and put in their collection or in an album

even the current collectors and dealers dispise these odd demonination 19 century coins

i had one major dealer tell me he would NEVER PAY BLUESHEET FOR ANY TWO CENT OR THREE CENT NICKEL COINS NO MATTER WHAT THEY LOOKED LIKE AS HE HATES THEM 893whatthe.gif

WELL SOUNDS GOOD TO ME 893applaud-thumb.gif

Michael:

I would have to agree with you. I think this is a far more evolved and civilized forum. Granted, as you said ; it does not move quickly, but it allows one to concentrate more on topics of value and really explore them as opposed to the Brand X forums where everything moves at light speed and there is less civility.

That is a nice proof 2 cent. I saw and bid on one just about like that one on ebay about 18-24 months ago. It was in a NGC PF65 RB holder with amazing reds and purples on the obverse. I think it went for around $1200 which was too high for me. I don't normally collect 2 cent coins, but this one was wonderful just to have as an example. Are we talking about the same coin?

thanks guys

merc this is not the same coin it is WAY better

and is in an ngc proof 66 rb holder

also no purple on this coin at all and the reverse is totally blue with no hairlines or nicks unlike thaT proof you saw on ebay some time ago

that ebay coin pales in comparison to this coin when viewed sight seen they are totally different coins in terms of technical quality and eye appeal

i do not know what the ebay coin traded at but this coin is worth lots yay.gif893applaud-thumb.gifyay.gif more than the ebay coin
