Longtime FS Jefferson Collection; Heritage auctions!

10 posts in this topic

Part of the Charlie Adkins FS Jefferson nickel collection is up for sale in Heritage auctions which ends in less then an hour! I've known Charlie for several years and have bought many great FS nickels from him. A few still remain in my #1 set. More of Charlie's collection will be auctioned off in the Heritage Signiture #277 auction held in Dallas TX.

I thought some of you would appreciate the heads up for some very nice FS nickels!

Thank you!

Regards, Leo

Wanted to add: Most of his coins are in the PCGS and ANACS holders!

I don't know if THIS is part of that set or not, but can you tell me why it had such a high reserve? I've been looking for a nice one of these and it's usually a $40 coin. So what makes this one worth the extra $100? confused-smiley-013.gif

Hoot, I'm watching your 43-D on ebay. Now quit advertising so I can get it for a song! devil.gif

I'm quite sure you won't end up paying as much as the one being offered at Heritage! 27_laughing.gif They are asking very strong MS67fs money for that coin and it ain't no 67!

The 43-D did not sell! Only 31 of the 57 nickels actually sold. Charlie had some reserves on a few of his coins because they were 6 steppers and he wasn't happy with the way Heritage handled his coins. I won't go into that so look for the Signiture auction in Dallas TX. I believe there are a different breed of bidders out there for these bigger auctions that are shelling out the grands for these coins.

They'd be called the public! headbang.gif

Just FYI, Leo, a typical 43-D MS67 6FS sells for around $100. I'm not saying that's right, but it's just the fact. There has not been a general evolution of collector differentiation of 5 and 6 step coins.

Well, I didn't bid nearly as much as they wanted for the one at Heritage, but I didn't expect it to go that cheap. As long as you were letting them go cheap I went ahead and picked up a couple more.

So, what song would you like to hear? yay.gif

Wasn't a matter of letting them go cheap, I simply ran a series of no reserve true auctions. It's what I do. Bids were not particularly good for most of my auctions this time. A couple did well, but I was a bit disappointed overall. Perhaps people are slowing up on Jeffs right now? Perhaps it's just a bad time of year to sell? I truly don't know.

Thanks for participating Randy. I'm always glad to know that a truly dedicated collector snagged one of my coins!

I know it's all a matter of timing. I had three raw nickels that closed last night too. Two of them were coins I expected to get $5 - $6 for that got bid up over $10. The other I expected around $25 - $30 for and got $17.50. I guess I came out ok on average. smile.gif

A few comments about my bidding on your nickels. I was only watching the 43-D. I don't collect Jeffs any more but I've been looking for a nice 43-D for a while because it was the first coin I ever purchased when I started collecting in 1974. That coin was probably a F-VF and is long gone from my collection now.

I have been watching ebay and Heritage and bid on a few over the last couple of months. Most were going around $40 unless they were ugly. I was quite surprised when yours closed so low. I've always liked the "War Nickels" so I quickly checked the others you had up and bid on the cheap ones, thinking I got a good price on each.

Today I decided to check sales prices for these coins on Teletrade. I rarely bother to check Teletrade any more because the series that I generally follow tend to go a good bit higher on Teletrade than on ebay or Heritage. I was surprised to find that the prices I won your coins for were pretty much in line with typical Teletrade prices, but maybe a bit lower. Perhaps I didn't do as well as I had thought at first.

Either way, I'm sure the coins are nice and they have the Hoot pedigree. yay.gif

As for Teletrade, maybe there are some bargains to be found there. Unfortunately I may have to switch collecting interests to find them. frown.gif That's not likely to happen any time soon.
