1909 Indian Cent PCGS MS65RD. Should I submit for 'recosideration'?

13 posts in this topic

Hello Mariner;

I agree with resubmitting your Indian Head Cent! It is at least an MS66 in my opinion. I bet you were disappointed when you received word that PCGS only graded it at MS65. I would have been. Those grading companies make me mad when they pull stuff like this. I've seen both under graded and over graded coins from them on many occasions. They need to get their grading policies straight with the graders for sure. Why don't you crack that stunning cent out and see what NGC gives it? Or were you going to resubmit it to PCGS again?

I think I'd have to see the coin in hand to make a call between 65 and 66. Of course, even then I probably wouldn't give the right advice because I'm not an Indian cent specialist. Why not take it to a show and get opinions of Indian cent dealers?

Is there a compelling reason to take the risk? Why not enjoy the coin as it is, where it is?

I decided to submit it for reconsideration. There is actually no risk involved as the coin is not removed from the holder while being reconsidered. If it does not upgrade it is returned in the same holder it was submitted in. The upside is, if it does upgrade the value almost triples. If it does not upgrade, nothing loss. I am completely satisfied with where it is now and will continue to enjoy it in my collection. Thanks all for your input. Will post the results when I get them.

Very hard to tell from that photo. As mentioned, the luster really doesn't show in those photos and the difference between 65 and 66 on these is often about luster. From the photos provided, you can see some minor carbon spotting though, so I think an upgrade is going to be tough because of that. That said, there are lots of 66 graded examples out there that look much worse... but there are also some very very clean looking 65s out there as well. Certainly some inconsistent grading at this grade level so anything is possible.

I have a 1909 IHC in PCGS MS66RD in my 1909 registry set if you'd like to compare to that one... I think mine is one of the better 66RDs out there as I passed on several other 66RD examples before settling in on the one I have now and I also paid quite a premium over what an average 66RD goes for.

I agree the minor spots may keep it out. I looked at yours and I would say it is very close to that except for the spots. The coin in hand is very lustrous on both sides, so that may help. I just thought I'd give it a shot. Nothing ventured, nothing gained. No matter the outcome, I will still be very happy with it.

Since you are asking the question -- you probably already know the answer.

So re-submit. Regardless it's a nice coin.

Thanks for posting.
