Understanding the 1864 L Penny

So I have several of the bronze 1864 pennies in low grades. I have read the articles about the pointed bust. Some are pointed but worn too much to see the L. Does it have to be high enough grade to see the L or is the pointed bust legitimate enough to say it is an L.
