"...slightly upset profile." = a preform planchet. This was tested for the HR MCMVII $20 in December 1907 but did not offer an advantage when working with 0.900 gold. Using 0.9999 gold it likely helped a lot becasue most fo the metal displacement was done in advance of the strike.
