OH MY! Check out my new Arkansas. WARNING: make sure you’re sitting down!

Arkansas half’s are one of, if not the most problematic issues of the entire early Commemorative series. Most examples are found with ugly mottled or dirty looking toning. Also, the surfaces are typically plagued with numerous ticks, hits, and marks.

Trying to find an Arkansas half with decent eye appeal is hard enough, but trying to find one with truly outstanding eye appeal is like looking for the proverbial needle in a haystack, so when I found this coin I knew that it was special, something that I may not ever see again and decided that I had to have it. The coin is in an NGC holder graded MS-66. Here are scans of the coin, but believe me it looks nicer in person!

The obverse is crescent toned in beautiful pastel shades of light violet, red, yellow, and baby blue. The baby blue continues completely around the rim, while the center retains its original silver color. On the reverse, a ring of toning goes about ¾’s of the way around the rims, but is most prominent at 6:00 and 12:00, where the same pastel violet, yellow, and baby blue can be seen. The baby blue color extends further in towards the center on the reverse than on the obverse, but the center is once again a very nice original silver color.

The coin has very nice satin luster, and mark wise the coin is very clean. There are only a few tiny ticks that can barely be seen with the naked eye on the obverse, and the reverse is mark free to the naked eye. I am thrilled to have been able to add this coin to my collection.

Enjoy

John

Bah! That's just mediocre. Send it to me and I'll send you a pair of refrigarator magnets as compensation.

John, that is truly a beautiful and remarkably clean Ark. Just finding one in this condition is a hard enough feat but to get the crescent tone is outstanding! Hard to understand why it didn't get a * attribute.

Send it to me and I'll send you a pair of refrigerator magnets as compensation.

What?!?!? Only two? I think it's worth a pair of oven mittens also! Cheapster!!! wink.gif

Hi David,

The coin is in an older NGC holder, not one of the old thick holders, but an older holder never the less. I'm not sure if NGC was giving out the stars when the coin was originally graded. I do feel that the coin would be a strong candidate for the star if I were to send it in for review.

That coin is smokin! smile.gif

When I read your title I honestly got shivers down my spine. For those of you not familiar with this issue, it is every bit as difficult as John has described, and more. It isn't so much that these coins went down hill over time, it seems as though the quality control was exceptionally poor at the time of minting.

John, that has to be one of the two or three prettiest Arkansas halves I have ever seen. Now, your challenge is to find an original, blast white Arkansas! 893whatthe.gif

Thanks for the kind comments about the coin everyone. smile.gif

David, Maybe I’ll send it into NGC someday to try for the star. To tell the truth, I have a few coins that I would like to send in to be reviewed for the star, but I’m hesitant to do so because they are in older NGC & PCGS holders and I don’t want them cracked out of the old holders if NGC doesn’t give them the star. confused-smiley-013.gif

Tom, Personally, I have only seen one other Arkansas half that I thought was as pretty as this coin. It was a ‘36d in a PCGS holder graded MS-67 that sold in a Heritage auction years ago. I liked it so much. I saved the images of it and still have them. grin.gif

Jeremy, Yes, this is the coin that I told you about last week. Don’t worry, you’ll get to see it in person at the next Parsippany show. Tom will get to see it also if he ever finds the time to go to another Parsippany show! devil.gif

Hoot, Aw shucks, you’re making me blush! blush.gif Seriously, it is I who am humbled to be a member of such a fine group of numismatists as those that choose to post here. thumbsup2.gif
