I have two very similar coins in my collection and was wondering which should remain in my collection and which should depart. Both are Hungarian denars struck at the Kremnitz mint in the name of Ferdinand I. I've owned the 1539 for a couple of years but recently bought the 1551 from Greg. The coins are common but rarely come in nice condition.

As I'm torn about what to do, why not solicit some input from the board!

1539 - Well struck, dark but fairly atttactive toning.

1551 - Bright and lustrous but not as well struck.

I'm interested in any comment you may have.

Not trying to influence the voting, but in my opinion the 1551 is a near gem coin and should be in an MS64 slab. The luster on it is also very nice.

I had my mind made up but then I was influenced by gereg's post and now I don't know which to pick.

The 1539 looks overgraded.

Actually, I think the 1539 is truly an uncirculated coin. I believe Greg felt the same way but though it might be a little too grungy to slab with an MS grade.

Sell it for big money now, keep the cash and invite your forum buddies out to lunch next Long Beach. thumbsup2.gif

I hope they don't come to Hungary*, these are not very expensive coins.

I think the 1551 is nicer looking and a cooler year, numerically speaking wink.gif

Really? You prefer the palindrome date an earlier one? I thought the extra age of the 1539 would give it a coolness edge.

Pick the one you thinks looks nicer. My opinion is only valid when I am buying.

Yes, the 1539 one is truly uncirculated. When James and I were figuring out our grades on these coins, I believe I said it was an MS62, but I thought they would slab it as AU55 just given the general look of the coin. While not a bad looking coin given its age, it's the type of coin that would draws laughs in an MS slab from those uninformed people who think all coins should look like they were minted yesterday.

The 1551 coin is uncirculated in my opinion. I was going to resubmit it, but since I had no intention of keeping it I just sold it outright to James for close to cost.

I'm gonna go with the 1539. While I do like the lighter color of the '51, the reverse is well off-center. And off-center coins never appealed to me. The darker color of the '39 does not put me off and it does appear to have underlying luster as well as a better strike. I just like it better overall.

Thanks for putting to words what I've never pinpointed about my likes. That's it! That (new) rule applies to Thing's Crustader coins as well. Off-center is a turn-off!

Define "close to cost" 27_laughing.gif

My standard forum member 50% profit margin. That's better than my usual 100% profit margin the commoners get.

So I should have only paid you 42.5 cents for that nickel you paid a quarter for? insane.gif

JJ,

I voted to keep them both. They are both nice coins and each have different quality’s that I find appealing. The off center strike of the 1551 only adds interest to the coin in my opinion. As you said, the coins are not really expensive so why not just kept and enjoy them both? confused-smiley-013.gif

I voted for the 1551. I voted before I read the opinions that followed. The off center doesn't bother me a bit. I felt I could see more details on the 1551 so voted that way.

I would only keep one as there are so many types of coins out there and I can't own them all...
