Yes, this coin really is this fugly

57 posts in this topic

When I first saw this coin for sale, I thought man, its a really fugly coin. The obverse looks like the face of a Sasquach, or perhaps TJ's 4th wife. But looking at my reference material, its actually in quite decent shape, because there wasn't much detail on the head, as he is suppose to be wearing a helmet. All of these Tancred issues were crude, as in the last one I posted (mean dude holding sword).

What the hell is that woman doing to that whatever it is?

My guess: The coin is celebrating the 100th Anniversary of the first woman executed in Canada. They used a giant spinning blade to cut the woman in half.

wait a minute, that "thing" she is grabbing looks like the engine and prop of an old airplane. acclaim.gif

There ya go! Canada KM#249 1994 $100 "WWII Home Front." The image is taken from Canadian artist Paraskeva Clark's 1945 painting entitled "Maintenance Jobs in the Hangar." My scan doesn't show all the detail but I think the uglyness still show through. grin.gif

The coin in the first post went for about $200.00. More than I was willing to pay. Now, your opinion (note TJ, I'm not asking for your opinion) on this coin. Same issue, but not as nice as the $200.00 coin. I do like the patina on this coin better. Not as much detail is available on the obverse as the $200.00 coin, and, not all of legend is visible on the reverse. Think this coin is the right money at $125.00? These things come up for sale rarely, and I'm leaning towards buying it since I really do like the patina. Whats your honest opinion?

CNG just posted this coin in their shop. Its an "angry dude holding sword", which is MORE common then my $125.00 coin. They are asking $265.00 You can actually see it is overstruck on the type coin I am thinking about buying.

I would prefer the first one at $200 to the second at $125. However, that's a reflection of my bias towards a coin with all the details present. On the second one the dude's face is barely visible and most of the inscription is gone.

As for the patina, to me they're a wash. How much do you prefer the patina on the second, enough to make up for the missing detail?

Here's how I would weight the two:

Coin 1: Detail 9, Patina 5 = Total 45

Coin 2: Detail 3, Patina 5 = Total 15

Since I like the first one at $200 I would like the second at about 1/3 the price or about $70.

You may value it differently, for example:

Coin 1: Detail 7, Patina 5 = Total 35

Coin 2: Detail 4, Patina 8 = Total 32

Using the above ranking, if you value the first one at $150 then the second is likely worth ~$135 which would make it a buy at $125.

After you fill in your own value for the first one along with your relative weights of the detail and patina you will be better postioned to make an informed decision. thumbsup2.gif

I like your weighting system of value, however, don't you need to expand the parameters or criteria to more than just detail or patina? How about corrosion, cut of planchet, eye appeal, etc. From an Industial Engineering point of view.

TRUTH

You absolutely need to expand the weighting system.

However, in this case I wanted to illustrate the thought process rather than get bogged down in details and minutiae. And since the main differences between the two coins illustrated were amount of detail and the patina those were good ones to choose.

I started thinking this way after reading a book on grading by Jim Halperin, Grading US Coins (?), and have found it very helpful.

Oh yea, I think CNG is goofed on skunk weed by asking $265.00 for that coin.

Thanks! I'm glad you found my method helpful. Are you going to bid on the second coin?

JJ, I did get the coin. Got the dealer down to $100.00. I think its a good deal, because I have been following what these coins go for closely. I can always sell it if I upgrade that coin. The Tancred coins seem to do well on ebay, and bring good money.

Hre is another example of the coin I found available. It is $125.00. I don't like it. To me, cleaning, although sometimes necessary with ancient and medieval coins, kills a coin.

I agree with you on this one. Even before reading your post the shiny, polished luster jumped out at me and not in a good way. The different coin of the same type in a couple of weeks, it must be a more common coin.

Are you really having lunch with TJ tomorrow?
