Jefferson Nickel Question...Can you Help

5 posts in this topic

What's the difference between a 1940 Proof and a 1940 Proof reverse of 40

I got mine back and I notice there's three listing for 1940 Proof.

Mine was a PF 67 Rev of 40, I see the difference with the rev of 38, but don't understand the rev of 40 difference.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Smitty

The vast majority of Proof 1940 Jefferson nickels have the "reverse of '40". That reverse has the 6 well defined steps on Monticello. There are a few proof '40 coins with the "wavy steps" reverse of 1938. Photos of the two designs may be found on my website: here.

That's what I thought but I'm not to bright.makepoint.gif

Same coin different label

Still it was Nice to Get a 67

Thanks,

Smitty

Also please note, just because the label says PR67 doesn't necessarily mean

it's a PR67 coin! Carefully look at the coin and compare it with others in any grade and make sure it has flawless deep mirrors! These proofs with flawless deep black mirrors will blow you away! There's no depth to them!

And that all the surfaces are practically blemish free! I've seen enough proofs in these high numbered slabs that have no more quality than say, a PR64 or PR65 coin.
