Here's a 1942 Jefferson nickel with a Breem 2679 number.

Hi everyoneI've had this coin for awhile not knowing what the Breem 2679 number meant.I have recently learned what so special about this coin! It's not any of those obvious things you would look for on a coin like a DDO or DDR. The coin doesn't have a mint mark nor any other irregularity that would be easy to catch with the eye.Does anyone want to make a guess before I give the answer?

No designer initials....FS?????

That's interesting that you would say that since I may have that area of the coin covered up. But the truth is, Felix Schlag's initials weren't added to the obverse until 1966 after popular demand of that time!

Not being a Jeff guy I really have no clue, but I will venture a guess:

Struck on a silver war nickel plancet but using the older dies without the big mintmark over Monticello?

Since you guys will never get it and the fact that there aren't really that many options out there to choose from, it's a surface phenomenon! I guess it's unusual to find this date without it's usual granular surfaces. But I found it interesting that a Breem number was noted for a type of surface change on a coin. (if I said that right?)

By the way, I recently learned about the variety from no other than Bern N. himself.

And yes, I know, the pics weren't that great! But it is a neat coin despite the fact that it's not a full stepper.

I was really hoping someone could confirm this with one of those big Breem books.

I hope you didn't feel offended! I was trying to turn a good question, an answer I don't have, into something funny! Of course I know the question and I may need to wait until I get to the Library again.

And some of you guys are mispelling "phenomenon"! 27_laughing.gif
